    The Broadus Track team – both boys and girls, achieved a number of placing ribbons at the 4C District Meet last week in Baker, and will send a large contingent of the team on to the Southern Divisional, this Thursday in Laurel. With only the top two placers in each event as automatic qualifiers for Divisionals, Broadus Coach Faith Dyrud knew the team would have to perform well at Districts.     May 16, 1924 Midwest Cancels Contracts for Digging 600 Oil Wells Paul Glosser of the Little Powder River Country returned to his home a few days ago from Casper, Wyoming and reported about the cancellations. Mr. Glosser reports there were between 1,500 to 2,000 men idle there and waiting for what employment they might find. Approximately 300 truck drivers have been laid off since the first of April, when the new railroad between Casper and Midwest began service.     By MT FWP MILES CITY – The 2024 paddlefish season on the Yellowstone River and Missouri River downstream of Fort Peck Reservoir starts Wednesday, May 15, which will be a harvest day. Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday are harvest days for all areas valid for the yellow tag, while Sunday, Monday and Thursday are catch-and-release days, and only at Intake Fishing Access Site near Glendive.   • Two School Board Trustees Elected

    The school board election came to a conclusion on May 8th, with three candidates vying for the two open trustee positions on the board. Waylon Billing received 285 votes, Bobbi Myers received 200 votes, and Kathryn Myers received 76 votes. The two positions won by Billing and Bobbi are in District 79J, and are three year terms.     Much of Eastern Montana was bathed in bountiful moisture on May 6th and 7th, as a storm covered a large portion of the area. Broadus officially received 2.62” at the courthouse. The storm dropped much needed moisture on the area after an exceptionally dry and windy April. In the month of April, Broadus received 0.44” of moisture, spread out throughout the month – only two days had over a tenth of an inch, and that was quickly blown away into the atmosphere by high winds.     The recycling center in Broadus is currently undergoing a makeover, with the goal of an easier experience for folks dropping off recycling, as well as providing a more efficient workplace for those tasked with sorting and baling the recycled goods.     By MT DPHHS Spring in Montana is a popular time to forage for morel mushrooms, a type of mushroom that is often considered a delicacy by restaurants and the public. However, morels can cause human illness if the proper identification, storage, and preparation steps are not taken. An outbreak of gastrointestinal (GI) illness occurred in Montana in the spring of 2023, when 51 people got sick after eating raw or only partially cooked morels at a restaurant.     Last month we learned that Lanette was able to procure the use of a typewriter thanks to the local schoolteacher who purchased one. Lanette willingly instructed the schoolteacher on how to use it in exchange for use of the typewriter. That way she started to type out the lyrics she had been recording from Mr. Fordwick’s songs.     Mark Louis Huseby, 65, of Hulett, Wyoming, passed away on May 6, 2024. He was born December 25, 1958, in Belle Fourche, South Dakota, to Eric and Jeannie Huseby.
