    After teaching in Broadus for 35 years, Broadus Junior High and High School Science Teacher Wanda Smith retired at the end of the school year. Smith sat down with us last week to discuss her long career as an educator. Wanda grew up in the Flathead Valley of Northwest Montana, matriculating to MSU-Bozeman for her Bachelor’s. She later yearned for more open skies, moving to South Dakota, where she began teaching.     Courtesy MT DPHHS The Montana Aging Services Bureau will be hosting a Training in Broadus on Monday, June 10th. The class will take place from 2-5 pm at the Broadus Community Center. The training will focus on working with senior citizens, specifically how to assess capacity and look for signs of financial exploitation and abuse. Sometimes, the only person willing to stand up for a senior victim is a professional like yourself.     Submitted by Jeff Noble The 2024 Bowhunter Education Field Day Course for Montana youth and adult bowhunters will be offered in Broadus on Saturday, June 22, from 1:00 to 5:00 pm. A “field day qualifier” print-out is required. Youths need to bring a parent with them on the first day, to sign permission slips.     By PR Extension Office Reports of grasshoppers are circulating from “heaps” to “just a few”, according to MSU Powder River Extension Agent Mary Rumph. Every fall, the USDA-APHIS publishes a grasshopper hazard map. This map, released in October of 2023, highlights Montana's severe risk of intensive outbreaks this season. Powder River County is primarily in the “orange zone”, indicating a high probability of 8-15 grasshoppers per square yard. Thus, it is important to be prepared.     Landen Capp, recently graduated senior from Broadus, played in the Cleverly 8-man football All-Star game on Saturday. The annual All-Star game, now in its 40th year, features some of the top senior athletes off the 8-man gridiron from across the Treasure State, and is held in Butte.
