It's Fair Time

"Blue Skies, Family Ties and Cow Pies" depicts the Powder River County Fair coming up next week! Prospective exhibitors are encouraged to pick up a Fairbook at the Extension Office and plan to bring something to enter in the Fair!

The annual Powder River County Fair will officially kick off Tuesday, August 7th with interview judging of all 4-H projects expect livestock and foods, according to Extension Agent Mary Rumph. Tuesday is also the day for setting up the Fair barn and getting the Community Center ready to receive entries.

Throughout the week, local 4-H Clubs will be holding fundraising activities. On Tuesday, the Tongue River Crossroads 4-H Club will be selling walking tacos and other forms of nourishment from 10-1, at the north end of the fairgrounds. On Thursday, the Mizpah Master 4-H Club will hold a car wash, from 2-4 PM in the IGA parking lot.

Meanwhile, Fair activities resume on Thursday at 9:00 a.m. with the 4-H Horse Show and 4-H Foods judging.

The Inflatables, also known as the "Adventure Zone" opens on Thursday at noon and again Friday and Saturday at 10:00 a.m. An Alive at 25 Driving Program for all drivers ages 14-25 will take place at the Fire Hall at 1:00. A Stick Horse Rodeo for contestants up to age 15 will stir up the dust in the arena at 6:00 p.m. Following the rodeo will be a Talent Contest sponsored by the Broadus High School Business Professionals of America (BPA). All acts and talents are welcome with a $10 entry fee per act.

Friday morning will begin with the CornerStore Farm & Ranch Breakfast at the Community Center at 7:00 a.m. Activities throughout the day include the judging of all open class exhibits, which need to be in place by 9:00 a.m. The 4-H Swine show begins at 9:00 a.m. and the Powder River Festival in the Park begins at 10:00 a.m. An ATV Safety Training will be held in the Fairbarn at 10:00, all day for all ages.

On Friday, Fair attendees have a special treat with comedian Kenn Serrano who will be on stage and strolling the Fairgrounds throughout the day providing a variety of entertainment including magic, juggling, balloon sculpting, a 6-foot unicycle and more! He will be on stage in the Park at 11:30 a.m.; and again at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. In between stage shows, the entertainer will be strolling the grounds, sculpting balloon animals and providing humor.

Another traditional crowd pleasing event will "Zeke Mader and Those Other Guys" providing music under the tent by the Community Center from 12:00 – 1:30 p.m. Enjoy the music generated by these home town boys.

Feeling competitive? The BPA is sponsoring a Cornhole Tournament at 1:00 p.m. in the Park. Shade up and perfect your toss, the cost is $15 per team.

And, while in the Park, take time to visit the vendors selling their wares during the Powder River Festival.

If interested in a little more action, Fair goers can test their riding abilities on the Mechanical Bull. The bull will be "bucking" from 1:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Friday afternoon will also feature the bum lamb and bum goat show, followed by the 4-H Sheep & Goat Show. The Poultry Show will take place at 4:00 p.m.

Friday afternoon and evening will feature the East Fork Ranch Rodeo. The packed afternoon kicks off with the ladies division and prelims beginning at 1:00 p.m. The calcutta will take place prior to the main event beginning at 6:00 p.m. Admission is $5 with children 6 and under free. Ranch bronc riding will take place during the main event.

Fair attendees will have the chance to get their feet moving to the music of the Cecil Allen Moore Band at the street dance by the park to conclude activities on Friday.

Saturday morning will feature the Powder River County Working Horse Show, beginning at 8:00 a.m. The popular bum calf show begins at 9:00 a.m., followed by the judging of the 4-H Beef exhibits.

The Broadus Volunteer Fire Department BBQ begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Community Center. In the Fairbarn, the 4-H Round Robin Showmanship contest will take place at 1:00 p.m.; followed by the calf scramble at 2:00 p.m.; the awards ceremony at 3:00 p.m. and concludes with the 4-H Livestock Auction at 4:00 p.m. The final event is the Buyer's BBQ at the Community Center at 5:00 p.m., at which everyone is welcome to enjoy.
