Karli Collins sends the ball over the net during the Lady Hawks' first home game against Terry.

Broadus hosted Terry on Tuesday of last week, for the first regular season match outside of the Fairview Tournament. Unfortunately, two Broadus starters, Brooke Burley and Jadyn Traub, had been injured prior to the match.

"There was a lot of scrambling," Coach Gordon Archer said when describing the reaction to losing the starters. "It forced us to move some girls into positions where they weren't necessarily comfortable, but I think the girls handled the transitions well."

Archer said that Hannah Rasmussen, Lacey Robinson, and Megan Johnson had to move around and play in positions for which they hadn't necessarily trained, but the girls "stepped up, and it turned out well for us."

Despite all the moving around, Broadus performed well, beating the Terry Terriers 3 to 1, winning the first game 25-7, losing the second 20-25, but coming back on the third and fourth to win 25-9 and 25-11.

Archer continued: "Kiarah Coulter had an outstanding match, putting up an impressive 19 kills on the night. Karli Collins played really well all around, and served really good. Kylee Drane made some great decisions with setting. We pretty well dominated three of the four games."

Kiarah Coulter spikes the volleyball.

The Lady Hawks next traveled to Ekalaka, which has been a very tough team to beat, as they traveled to State last year, and retained the core of their players this year. With Billing and Traub still out, Broadus had a tough obstacle to climb to beat Ekalaka, but according to Archer, the Lady Hawks held their own. Broadus lost the first game 16-25, the second 11-25, and played their best volleyball of the night in the third game, but still fell short, 18-25.

Archer said that overall he was happy with the girls' performance, "We played right with Ekalaka at times."

As of Tuesday, the coach thought that Brooke Billing would be back for this Thursday's match against Circle, but Jadyn Traub's future was still uncertain. The Lady Hawks will have most of the 8th graders called up to play JV for the Circle match, which is the only match on the agenda for this week. Next week, the Lady Hawks play Belle Fourche here in Broadus, then go on the road, playing in Wibaux Friday and Jordan on Saturday.
