Molly Lloyd

Superintendent of Schools

November 1, 2018

In anticipation of the election on November 6th, The Examiner sent out interview questions to the local candidates. Though all of the local elections are un-opposed for the general election, we felt that an introduction would be newsworthy and informative for the readers. The local candidates on the ballot include: Lee Randall, County Commissioner, Allen Drane, Jr., Sheriff/Coroner, Pat Phillippi, Treasurer, Cynde Jo Gatlin, Clerk & Recorder, Cathy Landa, Justice of the Peace, Jeff Noble, County Attorney, Molly Lloyd, Superintendent of Schools, and Phoebe Amsden, Public Administrator. We printed the first three candidates last week. The responses have been printed with minimal editing.

I was born and raised on the same place that my grandfather had homesteaded on in rural eastern Montana. I graduated from high school in 1982, then received my Associates of Arts Degree from Miles Community College in 1984. Next, I attended, what was then, Eastern College in Billings and graduated with my Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1986. I was a certified K-8 teacher, from there I married James (Button) Lloyd and started my teaching career at St. Labre School in Ashland, Montana. In 1990, my career took me to Park County, where I taught one year as the K-3 teacher and also was supervising teacher for Pine Creek and Richland Elementary Schools. In 1993, I got a full time job as a combination classroom teacher of first and second grade students at Canyon Creek Elementary. As the school grew and over the years, I had the opportunity to teach kindergarten through second grades. In that time I also, taught and coached our 3 daughters, help chair "I Love to Read" month, and work with many very interesting individuals over the 20 years at Canyon Creek School. In 2013, I took a leap of faith and retired from teaching to come live with my husband in Broadus. I cooked at the cafe and did other jobs before being elected as Powder River County Superintendent of Rural schools. I've held that job until now and I am asking for your support to be reelected again for another 4 more years as county superintendent.

One of my goals for this community is to provide an affordable Preschool Education to our students in this county. I am hoping to begin a Preschool Program in January, 2019, when my job as county superintendent is reduced to just 2 days a week. I realize that we will be starting in mid-school year and there will not be a lot of time to develop the skills needed to begin Kindergarten, but I feel that we need to begin somewhere. This Preschool will not be taxing to the county and help provide support in the critical areas of Reading, Writing, Math and Social Skills. I want be able to give our children an opportunity to learn and develop critical thinking skills that are needed to be successful both in and out of school.

Another goal is to make connections with our community's population. I would like to have children have the opportunity to visit with and learn from our residents in the Powder River Manner and at the Museum. The changes and struggles our grandfathers and grandmothers endured is a history lesson waiting to be shared. Encourage Jr. High and High School students to volunteer and get involved in community projects such as Bug's Life, 4-H, Small town spirit at sporting events to help encourage good and healthy habits that will benefit them later in their lives. I also am trying to bring back the County Spelling Bee and other non-athletic events. Provide family support for young families and encouragement for families that are going through a tough time in life. Plan more family focused events that teaches cooperation, respect and self-worthiness. I am open to suggestions and will welcome volunteers to help me with this goal to make my community a better place to live.
