4-H Members & Leaders Recognized at Achievement Night

Teen 4-H Club President Ashley Bilbrey welcomed more than seventy 4-H members, leaders and parents to the annual 4-H Achievement Night awards ceremony at the Broadus Community Center last Monday. The awards ceremony followed active ice breakers led by Teen 4-H members, including passing apples via chins, lifesavers via toothpicks and a wild game of musical chairs accompanied by Clark Appleman on the piano. Additional teens who assisted with the ice breakers, announcing and presenting awards included: Casey Knobloch, Kori Kolka, Tawna Quiroz, Ashley Bilbrey, Callie Williams, Hylee Layne, Karena Appleman, Kyle Minow, Kaydin Trent and Garrett Cunningham. Ashley first recognized the Powder River 4-H Council officers Missy Billing, President; Joan Knobloch, Vice President, Heather Cunningham, Secretary and Dawn Aye, Treasurer.

Achievement of Excellence Awards were presented to Casey Knobloch, Zachary Jones, Reuben Kinzer, Justin & Lea Aye, and Clark & Karena Appleman. The Achievement of Excellence recognizes youth who are actively involved in the Powder River County 4-H program. These award winners participated in Demonstration Day, exhibited at the fair and completed records in each of their projects. They've also taken their 4-H involvement to the next level by either promoting 4-H, leading an educational workshop, helping someone with their project or participating in a community service activity–it's what 4-H is all about.

Krista Gotfredson was recognized for contributing ten years to the 4-H program as a volunteer leader, receiving a special award from 4-H Council.

Youth recognized for their outstanding work as club Secretary included Deanna Twedt, Oliveah Schaffer, Mariah Higgins, Kori Kolka, and Rebecca Aye. They each received a gift sponsored by Kelda Page. Treasurer awards were presented to Sterling Graham, Kayleigh Opstedahl, Andrea Swenson, Lea Aye, Kaydin Trent, and Ashley Bilbrey. They received awards sponsored by John and Julie Riley. Club Historians that were recognized included Lauryn Billing, Laney Williams, members of the Powder River Rising Stars, Colton Jones and Jeff Cahoon. Colton Jones and Jeff Cahoon were recognized for doing an outstanding job with their club's scrapbooks, and received an award sponsored by the 4-H Council. Kori Kolka and Justin Aye were presented with the Top 4-H Club reporter awards, sponsored by Mary and Owen Rumph.

The Beef Carcass Contest awards were presented to Karena Appleman, first place, Kori Kolka, second and Mariah Higgins, third place. The winners split a cash award sponsored by Lester and Dawn Aye and John and Kristi Elgin and received Steer of Merit certificates sponsored by the Montana Stockgrowers Association. In addition, Karena received a belt buckle sponsored by Craig & Christine Appleman. Additional winners of the Steer of Merit Certificates were Oliveah Schaffer and Jayce Schroeder.

Members who received Hog Carcass Awards were first place – Karena Appleman; second – Shaylee Bilbrey and third, Jayce Schroeder. They split a cash award sponsored by Northwest Farm Credit Services. Karena also received a belt buckle sponsored by Craig & Christine Appleman and a certificate for Swine of Excellence.

The Top Fair Exhibitor awards are presented to the top Junior and Senior exhibitors with the most entries in the Fair. The recipient in the Junior Division was Lauryn Billing, who received an award sponsored by Tim & Gaylene Fortner. The Top Fair Exhibitor in the Senior Division was Karena Appleman, who received an award sponsored by John & Julie Riley. Karena was also recognized for winning a State Award in the Quilting Project, earning a trip to Atlanta, Georgia for National 4-H Congress. She received financial assistance from both the 4-H Council and Teen 4-H for her trip scheduled for later this month.

The ceremony concluded with a slide show highlighting the 4-H year followed by a taco supper. The meat was donated and prepared by Tedi Jo Williams and Krista Gotfredson with additional dishes contributed by 4-H families.
