Broadus students spell their way to victory

Syriah Sutton, Rebecca Aye, and Kayleigh Opstedahl are pictured above, after their stellar performances at the Spelling Bee. Each young lady is the respective winner in her class, while Kayleigh is the overall winner.

The Broadus 4th, 5th, and 6th grade classes competed in a Spelling Bee, last week at the Courthouse. The students were arranged in the jury booth of the courtroom, where they were tested on their spelling knowledge by proctor Barb Mitchell. Meanwhile, judges Julie Long, Lori Fortner, and Pat Hanlan provided assistance on correct spelling, while a room full of fellow students and parents watched the action.

The numbers were slowly winnowed down, with some students failing out on words that were even difficult for adults to spell correctly. Nevertheless, the Broadus learners did very well, as a testament to their excellent teaching and no doubt some help with reading and spelling at home.

Eventually, three students remained, as champions of their respective grades. 4th grader Syriah Sutton then faced 5th grader Kayleigh Opstedahl and 6th grader Rebecca Aye in the finals.

Syriah fell out on her first word, leaving Rebecca and Kayleigh to duke it out. The pair both spelled their first words correctly, and in the next round, Rebecca misspelled "scrunched". If Kayleigh spelled the next word correctly, it was game over, and Kayleigh didn't disappoint, confidently spelling the word "listener", to win first place.

Kayleigh will now go on to compete at the State Spelling Bee, to be held March 16th at Rocky Mountain College in Billings.
