Hawks compete at Southern C Divisional Tourney
February 28, 2019
After a 4th place showing at the 4C District basketball tournament two weeks ago in Miles City, the Broadus Hawks boys team went on to play in Laurel last week, at the Southern C Divisional Tournament. This marked the first time the Broadus boys team had been to Divisionals since the 2013-14 season.
The Hawks' first challenge was Plenty Coups, the number one seat from the 6C, on Thursday. In the game against Broadus, Plenty Coups played a fast-paced game, complete with good defense, and ran a full court press against Broadus for much of the game. The Plenty Coups team also featured a number of Seniors, which made for an experience foe.
Despite the list of challenges, Broadus came out strong, leading through much of the 1st quarter, and were at one point up 12-6. Plenty Coups came back later in the 1st, finishing the quarter up 16-14 on Broadus. In the second quarter, Broadus fell behind, going into the locker rooms down behind but still within striking range, 28-38. After three quarters, the score was Broadus 41, Plenty Coups 58. Broadus stayed fairly close through much of the 4th quarter, down 51-64 halfway through the quarter, but fell in the end, 55-81.
Tayden Gee led the Hawks in scoring and rebounds, with 12 points and 6 boards. Johnny Richards had 11 points in the game.
Plenty Coups went on to compete against Melstone in the championship game, losing in a close one, 62-57.
Melstone will play at State in the number one seat from the Southern C, with Plenty Coups in the number two seat.
Broadus next faced Bridger, on Friday. Bridger lost to Wibaux on Thursday, and were hungry for blood as they faced the Hawks.
Broadus fell behind early in the Bridger game, as the Hawks' shots just weren't seeming to fall. After the first quarter, the Hawks were down 6-15. At the half, the score was 22-31, with Bridger in the lead. The score was 31-43 after three, and the Hawks tried to mount a comeback in the 4th, but just couldn't overcome the deficit. Towards the end of the game, Broadus commited a number of fouls to try and regain possession, which was to no avail. Broadus lost by ten points, 48 to 58.
Bridger would go on to lose to Wibaux in the consolation game.
Tayden Gee scored 13 points and had 8 rebounds for the Hawks, while Beau Kuhbacher had 11 points and 5 rebounds.
The 4C had a good showing at the Southern C, with Melstone going to State from the Boys, and both the Ekalaka and Wibaux girls going on to State, in the one and two seat, respectively.
On the year, Beau Kuhbacher had 251 points, going 66% from the free throw line. Beau also went 48 for 166 from beyond the arc.
When looking through the record books, we noted that in 1990, Chad Harrington sank 97 shots from three point land, out of 271 shots fired. The 97 three pointer made puts Chad third in the all-time Montana High School record book, while the 271 three point attempts on the season puts Chad at second all-time in Montana.
Returning to this season's stats, Tayden Gee scored the second most for the team, with 235 points. Tayden led the Hawks with 225 rebounds.
Kashus Giacometto had 214 points, and 142 rebounds on the season.
Clay LaPlant had 210 points, 117 rebounds, and led the Hawks in assists, with 78.
Johnny Richards had 142 points on the year.
Marcus Mader had 148 points, and 68 assists, while maintaining a 66% free throw shooting percentage on the season.
It should be noted that these stats came from the Hudl stat books, which is a computer video service the school uses to break down games. Sometimes the stats Hudl comes up don't jive 100% with the person on the court running the stat book, so the Hudl stats printed here should not be considered official.
Two Senior Hawks, Kashus Giacometto and Clay LaPlant, as well as foreign exchange student, Alessandro Galieni, will be graduating this year. The loss of Senior leadership is no doubt a blow for the team, but at the same time, a strong group of young players is emerging, which bodes well for seasons to come.
