Here's the Dirt on the Broadus Community Garden

March 28, 2019

The Broadus Community Garden Project will take root May 2019 near the Powder River Manor, in the southeast corner of the property. Community members can rent a garden plot in the garden and grow their own produce to eat or share.

Raised and in-ground plots as well as a wheel-chair accessible plot will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Full plots are 8’ x 16’, $30 each; half plots are 8’ x 8’, $15 each. Members pay the plot fee annually to help pay for water, additional plot development, and maintenance. Water hook-ups will be provided, and members will need to bring their own gardening tools, hoses, sprinklers, and seeds/seedlings. Check out the Broadus Community Garden Project page on Facebook, or stop by the Extension Office for a Signup Form.

Objectives of the BCGP are to: improve access to healthy foods and improve the health of community members; develop youth skills in gardening, nutrition education and agricultural business; and increase awareness of the benefits of pollinators in the food chain.

A volunteer group led by MSU Extension Agent Julie Riley and Powder River County Public Health Nurse Darlynn Williams is currently overseeing development of the BCGP, which will be governed by a volunteer Executive Committee in the future. The project is funded in part by a USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service grant and by donations from generous community members for material, labor, and deer-proof fencing supplies, etc. The garden can benefit from additional donations and volunteers; contact MSU Extension at 406-436-2424, or the Public Health Office at 406-436-2297, for details.
