School Board hires teachers, staff at monthly meeting
April 11, 2019
The Broadus School Board met Monday evening, conveniently scheduled during the NCAA National Championship Men’s College Basketball Game.
First on the agenda was the appointment of a representative for District 32J, which has been vacant for a year. A small population in the 32J District meant that eligible candidates were few and far between, let alone those with kids for a vested interest in the school district.
Robert Jones was appointed for the 32J position, and sworn in during the meeting.
Discussion was held regarding the hiring of teachers, with some concerns brought up by board members; ultimately all classified staff, teachers, and summer workers were hired for 2019-20. Board Member Danny Johnson voted “nay” on the hirings, with the rest of the board voting to hire.
Another motion was passed regarding summer staff hirings needing to pass a pre-employment physical prior to hiring.
Cass Zimmer was approved as an Assistant Junior High Track Coach, under Head Coach Ashley Emmons. 28 Junior High athletes are competing in track this season, which now also includes 6th graders.
The board went into executive session regarding parental concerns with the girls basketball program. Following the closed session, coaches for 2019-20 were hired, other than the spring sports, spring play advisor, and activities director, which will be hired following this spring sports season.
Next on the agenda was a vote regarding recommendations from the transportation board, which had a meeting on March 25th.
The transportation committee’s recommendations involved several factors:
1. Eliminate Bus 6, Ray Traub’s route
2. The West Powderville route will be extended for three years with a 6% mileage increase.
3. Adjust the rates on Buses 1 and 7 to reflect the actual mileage driven, which was slightly different than in the original contract.
A motion to make these changes passed.
The next meeting of the board will take place on Monday, May 13th.
