Broadus Schools Superintendent Jim Hansen

SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT

April 11, 2019

Every winter most of us look forward to spring with eager anticipation of a new beginning. This is also the time of year students begin to think about summer vacation. Teachers attempt to keep students engaged academically, and everyone tries to schedule activities as we dash for the finish line. Often times frustration ensues; we complain to our spouse or friends and admire the greener grass on the other side of the fence. Most of us have been guilty of this behavior. Instead of being critical and dissatisfied, maybe we need to reflect on the positive aspects and be more appreciative of what we have.

As I visit other schools and administrators I have validated my appreciation for this school system. Ten years ago when I was approached about considering the superintendent position, I immediately expressed concerns over the declining enrollment in the elementary district, the need of repairs to facilities, and the fact that a large portion of the staff were at or near retirement. Yes, these issues still persist, but we certainly are better equipped to confront them today. Your school has completed numerous facility improvements and has implemented incentives to attract and retain staff; enrollment continues to decrease, but we have been able to adequately maintain our academic and extra-curricular programs.

Over the past few months I have gained a great deal of admiration for this school district. This community has always been extremely supportive. Many school systems are not as fortunate. The reality is all organizations have obstacles, some more than others. In times of discontent maybe all of us need to reflect on how fortunate we are and celebrate what we have.
