Broadus Track Team excels at Divisional Tournament
Coulter, Herzog win events
May 23, 2019
The Broadus Track team traveled to Laurel last week for the Southern C Divisional Tournament. The entire team had qualified in Baker the week prior, and were ready to face all comers in Laurel.
"The team performed really well. They stepped up to the plate at the right time, and just did great at Laurel," Broadus Head Track Coach Jerry Coulter commented on their performance.
The entire team qualified for State in at least one event or as alternates, which is a great showing for the Hawks.
Leading the team was Senior Lady Hawk Kiarah Coulter, who placed in five events, winning two. Kiarah won the Long Jump as well as the Shot Put. She placed 2nd in the Javelin, while winning third in the High Jump and Triple Jump.
Kiarah has now qualified for State in 18 of the 20 events she entered throughout her four years of High School. The two events for which she did not qualify were 6th place performances at a previous divisional meet – with rule changes coming about this year, 6th place qualifiers now move on to State. Impressive performances indeed.
Other girls on the team also performed well, including Abigail Martin, who set a personal record in the High Jump to take 6th place.
"Abigail has been an inspiration," Coulter commented. "In December she was on crutches and now she's going on to State Track."
Martin's first time clearing the bar in High Jump was last week at the District Meet.
Karli Collins set a personal record in the Discus, to take 6th place.
"Karli has really improved in the Discus, and I'm proud of her performance," Coulter said.
Rachel Rasmussen also set a personal record in the 3200 meter run to take 6th place.
On the boys side, Luke Herzog won first in the 800 meter run, while Herzog, Bailey Smith, Johnny Richards, and Kyle Minow qualified for State with a 5th place showing in the 4x400 meter relay. Minow also took 5th in the Discus.
"The team had to come through to move on to State, and they did what they needed to do," Coulter said.
The team will leave this Thursday for the State Meet, which will also take place in Laurel. The State Meet will be held on May 24th and 25th, with events for Broadus beginning at 12:15 on Friday.
