Fun Times at the Manor

The Manor celebrated National Nursing Home Week May 12th – May 18th with loads of fun activities for the residents and their families to enjoy. The Activities Department started off the week in style with beautiful corsages for each lady at the Manor. A Mother’s Day tea followed a delicious lunch where families and loved ones joined their mothers and lady friends for tea cakes, conversation, and drinks.

Monday officially kicked off the events with the launching of the balloons. It was a perfect day for the residents to watch a beautiful display of balloons gracefully dancing through the air, strings reflecting the sunlight. The balloons were clad with labels that state the phone number of the Manor. If someone finds a balloon, please call the Manor to let them know the location where it was found. Some residents are very interested in knowing how far the balloons travel. Next, Sue Richards was kind enough to read the proclamation to the residents. Sue was instrumental in the planning and implication of many of the activities for the week. We so appreciate her efforts!

Monday afternoon brought Ray Ragsdale with the firetruck to lead the Golf Cart Parade. Seven community members were kind enough to loan the Manor their golf carts for the day. Included in this generosity were Dave Mader, Myles Gardner, Ted Amsden, Rick and Chad Gatlin, Larry Woolston, and Sue Richards. The residents who wished to participate enjoyed a ride downtown on this 79 degree day escorted by family and Manor staff. After a short rest, the residents enjoyed seven children racing power cars in the parking lot provided by Vicki Klemm and Sue Richards. Great fun was had by all!

Tuesday swung into action with a game of Progressive Poker. The residents were encouraged to go from station to station to pick up their poker hand. Mrs. Bobbie Connor won this event with an impressive hand of 4 of a kind! When the weather warmed up a bit, many residents congregated on the back patio for a “Pre-school Stick Horse Rodeo” followed by ice cream cups. Thank you to all the moms, grand-mothers, and day care for sharing their 2 – 5 year olds with the residents. Each child was rewarded for participating with a cowboy hat, scarf, and medal. Residents and children had a great time!

Ice cream cups were given out to help cool down the kids and residents alike. After lunch, Sue Richard’s two grandsons went from room to room on their motorized horses to visit the residents. This was followed by family and friends meeting up in the dining room for a rip roaring “Kentucky Derby” where everyone selected a horse, and then as they rolled the dice, the horses sped down the track. Mint Juleps, the official drink of the Kentucky Derby, were served at this event. It was Bobbie Connor’s lucky day as she was the only one to pick the winning horse, Black Velvet!

“Redneck Day” was the theme for Wednesday. The residents started the day with a Jeff Foxworthy Show on the big screen TV. At one point, resident Ken Smith burst out laughing when the topic of the show was “Men don’t lose their hair during old age, it just comes out in different places like your ears and nose.” Next, Activities read redneck jokes to the residents, followed by a “Redneck Style Show”. The grand finale of this fun filled show included our mighty leader, Cherie Stachey, as a pregnant bride brought in with a wheel barrow by her “groom” played by Taylor Price. Amanda Preite played an awesome redneck minister; while our very own Jim Espy was the father of the bride clad with a “shotgun” (this was a toy, of course). Jim Espy deemed this his favorite activity of the week. The majority of the staff participated in the style show. Thank you all for all for your support and participation!

After lunch, three community establishments joined in on the fun with a “Wheel Barrow Race”, Participants included, Broadus Insurance representative, Pete Wenzel with partner, Braelynn Powell of the Manor, Congregational Church’s Nick Knoblauch with partner Caeligh representing Boot and Tack, and Powder River Manor’s teams, Cherie Stachey with Jo Earley & Casey Heimann partnered up with Lizzie Drane. The big winner by two seconds was Casey and Lizzy with a 22 second run. Thank you to the businesses who participated in this laughter filled event! The day ended with redneck games including a commode/toilet paper throw, rubber band/beer can shoot, and a sling shot shoot. With a twinkle in his eye and a grin on his face, resident Stanley Damm decided that it was more fun shooting rubber bands at the staff!

Thursday was “Fishing Day”. The residents were given clues and pictures of common Montana and Alaskan fish to identify. Charley Emmons stated that this was his favorite event of the week. Next, the residents watched a “Sea World” presentation on the big screen where orca whales did fascinating tricks. Unfortunately, the afternoon’s scheduled activity of s’mores cooked on the fire pit turned into microwaved s’mores due to weather conditions.

Finishing up the week community members were invited to the “Rusty Zipper” where friends and family enjoyed donuts together. Later, the activities department made homemade ice cream with the residents and delivered ice cream cups to the rooms. Bonnie Powell was a doll and stepped in to play music for the residents since the scheduled community member had a conflict in her schedule. Anne Brimmer was very disappointed that she could not make it and plans to play for the residents on a different date. Kristina Ryan volunteered to take resident and family pictures. Her awesome pictures can be seen on the Manor webpage. Thank you to these special people for your community service. That afternoon was filled with Cornhole and horseshoe games.

A heartfelt thank you to all who helped to make this week a fun filled week for our residents. A very special thank you goes out to Sue Richards who took a very active role in making Nursing Home Week a success. We always appreciate help and participation from this wonderful community.
