Art & Soul Group convenes for May Meeting

By Lana Smith

The May meeting of Art & Soul convened with 5 members present.

The meeting was called to order with members telling about the different mediums they have tried, what their favorite medium is and why.

In old business it was reported that we have eleven paid members to date, we are in good financial standing, and the recent colored pencil workshop was recapped.

In other old business, the July Art Show was discussed. We are in need of volunteers from our group to help set up, work the show, tear down and clean up. We will use our Facebook group page, Art & Soul to help get this organized. There have been questions about eligibility of artwork for the show, and several pieces in question were approved as the groups intent is to showcase the wide variety of talented artisans that are from our area. So far there are about 20 artists who will be participating. We are requesting that folks who are in possession of artwork by deceased artists from our area will consider loaning their treasured pieces for the weekend, as we would like to have a separate section for these special works. Lana Smith or Ronda Gatlin are the contact people for this, or you can post on the Facebook page.

For new business, the dates of July 21-22, 2020 were set for a Karen Knutson Art Workshop. Karen (Nisley) Knutson is a very popular, nationally recognized artist originally from Powder River County. Her workshop dates get filled far in advance; thus the wait for an entire year. We are very excited she has agreed to come here and teach, as the opportunity to learn from a master artist doesn’t come around too often. There will be more details about this in the future.

Another class, this one taught by local artist, Laura Lee Ulrich, will be held at her home on June 22nd. Laura Lee is an emerging artist who has recently won some major awards and has been accepted into some prestiges shows. It is a beading class, entitled “Fancy Feathers”.

In other new business, it was agreed upon to sponsor an Art Award at the Powder River County Fair.

After the conclusion of the meeting several people stayed to work on their projects from the colored pencil workshop.

The next meeting will be held on Thursday, May 27.
