Drane plays in All-Star game
June 6, 2019
Thomas Drane played in the Bob Cleverley 8-Man All Star Football Game, on Saturday in Butte.
Thomas was a standout player for Broadus over his high school career, and was picked for the All-Star team last year. He was listed at 6'4" and 245 lbs on his program for the Blue Team at the Cleverley game, playing Defensive End, Left Guard, as well as manning the Kickoff Team. Besides the accolades of being accepted for the team, Drane was also selected by his teammates to be a team captain. "I must have been doing something right," he said during an interview Monday.
Indeed he should be happy, as the Blue team, consisting of players from across the Eastern and Northern reaches of Montana, dominated the Red team, winning 32-7.
Drane said he made a couple of the first tackles of the game, which helped to keep the Red team behind; the Blue Team would go into halftime up 26-0, and were able to keep up the pressure and maintain a good offensive momentum throughout the game.
Thomas said that playing in Butte was definitely a change in scenery compared to his seasons of playing in Eastern Montana, with one big change being the hike up the hills to the dorms following each practice session. The teams arrived Monday, and had two-a-day practices from Tuesday through Thursday to prepare for the game. In between practices, they were able to swim at Fairmont Hot Springs, and go to the movie theater and bowling alley.
Thomas was joined by other former rivals from our conference, including players from Circle, Scobey, Plentywood, Fairview, and Culbertson. The Blue Team's Head Coach was Taw Eissinger of Circle.
Drane enjoyed the experience, and will spend his summer working for TRECO here in Broadus before returning to Butte this fall to attend lineman school.
