A poem written by Lyman Amsden during his days on the USS Formoe. Lyman served on this ship during the Korean War. He now runs the Corner Store in Broadus with his wife, Anne.


Set the special sea detail, the ship is now underway.

Standing watch on the bridge or as lookout, with spray in your eyes.

At sea on a cold windy day or running training exercises in the bay.

White caps on the water, and a long trailing wake.

Up a ladder you may not go, when the ship takes a notion to roll and pitch.

White lightening in after steering, Raisin Jack down below.

The gas in the sleeping...
