Old threshing machine donated to museum

Standing in the yard of the Powder River Historical Museum as mute testimony to changing farming methods is a McCormick-Deering threshing machine, owned by the Brownfield and Gardner Ranches of Box Elder Creek.

The machine, in nearly mint condition, was acquired nearly 40 years ago at a Yellowstone Valley auction near Miles City. Towering above other examples of by-gone farm machinery, it is considered a valued acquisition by the Historical Society.

Contrasting to the behemoth in a busy fortnight of acquisitions are interesting school pictures, the gift of Ruth Newmiller, consisting of the 30-member 1924 Broadus High School student body and a nostalgic photo of the last Edwards school students in 1958. Valued photos of pre-Wrangler days of 1934-37, taken by the late Catherine Lockwood, were recently sent by her daughter, Kathleen Smith of Des Moines, WA. The pictures included glee club and other musical groups Mrs. Lockwood directed, as well as her elementary classes and 1935-36 senior pictures.

One other valued photo on display as a gift from Buster and Gladys Deibel is an exquisitely framed picture of the famous 4000-pound white-faced steer raised by Buster 30 years ago, which gained nation-wide fame on tour for polio benefit.

Joining the items is a uniquely displayed first Broadus Mountain Bell 1951 telephone directory. The three-digit numbers are a far cry from the complex array now being contended with. The directory is a gift from Lloyd Rue.

The Museum and Visitor’s Center continues to note numerous United States and foreign guests on its color pin map. In the past week several couples from England and Germany toured the center. Hoped for before the tourist season is over are visitors from the two remaining “hold out” states, Vermont and New Hampshire.
