County Fair Went Hog Wild!

Junior swine showmen keep tabs on their pigs during showmanship at the County Fair.

The Powder River County Fair boasted twenty-nine market hog entries, the largest number at the Fair in the last four decades, according to Extension Agent Mary Rumph.

"It was a whole hog year!" she commented. "And what a variety – every size, color, shape and weight imaginable," she added.

"The new hog and sheep pens, sponsored in part by Broadus Boot & Tack, Vern's and PRC were a wonderful contribution to the Fair, both in functionality and appearance, said John Elgin, Fairboard Chairman.

The Grand Champion Market Hog weighed 260 pounds and was exhibited by Karena Appleman, receiving a cash award sponsored by Craig & Jackee Randall. Jaxon Bilbrey exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion Hog, receiving an award sponsored by the Trucano Ranch. Both exhibitors also received cash awards sponsored by C&B Operations. The Champion Senior Showman honors went to Karena Appleman who received a buckle donated by Andrew & Jeridee Cathey and Pat Phillips in memory of Carl and a cash award sponsored by Denbury Onshore. Beau Kuhbacher captured the Reserve Champion Senior Showman rosette, receiving an award sponsored by the Broadus Vet Clinic. In a class of twenty-one Junior Showman, Rheanna Schroeder rose to the top winning Champion Junior Showman earning a buckle sponsored by Kyle & Teri Lindberg and a cash award sponsored by Denbury Onshore. Reserve Champion Junior Showman honors went to Abi Krantz; while her brother Kanin captured the Best Beginner Showman award. Abi received an award sponsored by Ed & Bev Schaffer; and Kanin received an award sponsored by Bub & Carlene Gaskill.

The Grand Champion Market Steer was exhibited by Jaxon Bilbrey, weighing 1,375 pounds. Jaxon received a buckle sponsored by Earl & Betty Aye. Reserve Grand Champion Market Steer honors went to Grayson Arithson and his 1,290 pound steer, receiving an award sponsored by Horizon Marketing Agency. In addition, both exhibitors received cash awards sponsored by C&B Operations. Both of these steers will compete in the Southeastern Montana Special Championship 4-H Market Beef Contest in Miles City on Friday, August 23rd at 6:30 p.m. against the top steers from seven other counties.

The Champion Senior Beef Showman award went to Karena Appleman; Mariah Higgins won the Reserve Champion Senior Showman honors. Karena received a buckle sponsored by John & Julie Riley and the Gary Green Memorial and a cash award sponsored by Denbury Onshore; Mariah received prizes donated by Karrels Cattle Company. In tight competition, Jayce Schroeder won the Champion Junior Beef Showman contest with his sister Rheanna right on his heels earning Reserve Champion honors. Jayce received a buckle donated by Tracy & Becky Anderson and cash donated by Denbury Onshore; Rheanna received prizes donated by Dean & Jill Kolka. The Best Beginner Showman award went to Colton Jones who received an award sponsored by Cunningham Trucking.

In the beef breeding show, Jayce Schroeder made a clean sweep by exhibiting the Champion Angus Heifer, and the Grand Champion Beef Breeding Female, a cow-calf pair, and the Reserve Grand Champion Beef Breeding Female. He received belt buckles sponsored by Mangen Angus and MT Tractors & Equipment and prizes sponsored by Owen & Mary Rumph.

The Champion Crossbred Female was exhibited by Jeff Cahoon and the Champion Any Other Breed by Oliveah Schaffer.

The Grand Champion Calf Scramble Heifer was exhibited by Zeason Schaffer who received an award sponsored by Cunningham Trucking. The Reserve Grand Champion Scramble Heifer was shown by Grayson Arithson. Zeason's heifer was donated last Fall by Mike & Margie Riley; Grayson received a heifer donated by the Talcott Ranch.

The Grand Champion Calf Scramble Pair was exhibited by Kyle Minow, who received an award sponsored by Cunningham Trucking. Kyle's entry began with a heifer donated by Ted & Cathy Elgin. Oliveah Schaffer, exhibited the Reserve Champion Calf Scramble Pair. Her project started with a heifer donated by Dean & Jill Kolka.

The Grand Champion Market Lamb, weighing 135 pounds was exhibited by Shaylee Bilbrey. She received a buckle donated by Kyle & Shelley West and a cash award sponsored by C&B Operations. Garrett Cunningham exhibited the Reserve Grand Champion Market Lamb, receiving an award sponsored by Jiggs & Marlee Bilbrey & cash sponsored by C&B Operations. The Champion Senior Showman, Lea Aye, received a buckle sponsored by Jim & Emily Madsen and the Kelda Page Family and cash sponsored by Denbury Onshore. Beau Kuhbacher was the Reserve Champion Senior Showman, receiving awards sponsored by the Jim & Kathy Bowers Family. The Champion Junior Sheep Showman was Jaxon Bilbrey who received an award sponsored by Dan & Lisa Lynch & Charles Carter, Inc. He also received a cash award sponsored by Denbury Onshore. Reserve Junior Sheep Showman honors went to Shaylee Bilbrey, who received an award sponsored by Calvert Backhoe. The Best Beginner Sheep Showman was Ashton Madsen who received an award sponsored by the Riter Ranch.

In the Breeding Sheep Show, Corey Knobloch exhibited the Champion Suffolk Ewe, with his sister Casey showing the Reserve Champion Suffolk Ewe. The Champion Crossbred Ewe was shown by Shaylee Bilbrey; with Garrett Cunningham exhibiting the Champion Crossbred Ram.

The Grand Champion Breeding Sheep award was captured by Corey Knobloch, a buckle sponsored by the Biddle Beavers 4-H Club. Reserve Grand Champion Breeding Sheep honors went to Shaylee Bilbrey, who received an award sponsored by the Jim & Kathy Bowers Family.

Lea Aye exhibited the Champion Ewe Fleece, which also earned Grand Champion honors. She received awards sponsored by the Tri-State Wool Marketing Association and Running Wild and the Gift Ranch.

The Grand Champion Market Hog at the Fair was exhibited by Karena Appleman.

Three goats came to the Fair, one breeding goat and two market goats. The Grand Champion Goat Project was exhibited by Alexis Gotfredson. She received a belt buckle sponsored by the PRCF. Alexis was also the Champion Junior Goat Showman, receiving an award sponsored by The Daisy Patch – Michelle & Chad Wilson. The Grand Champion Senior Goat Showman was Beau Kuhbacher, who received an award sponsored by Broadus FFA Alumni. Baylor Kuhbacher received Reserve Junior Goat Showmanship honors receiving an award sponsored by John & Jennie Olson.

Beau Kuhbacher exhibited the Grand Champion Market Goat with his brother Baylor earning Reserve Grand Champion honors.

Mother/daughter team Kate and Delaney Ruland exhibited open class poultry at the Fair. Kate's entry was named Grand Champion; with Delaney earning Reserve Grand Champion. Their exhibits were a nice addition to the Fair!
