Headstones Honor Soldiers Buried in Unmarked Graves during Power River Expedition of 1865

Twelve memorial headstones were recently placed along the Powder River for American soldiers who died during the Powder River expedition of 1865. The upright white marble markers, furnished by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, are dedicated to the memory of U.S. soldiers who lost their lives between September 1-10, 1865 during the Indian Wars in southeastern Montana Territory, and whose remains were never later recovered.
