Adult volunteers are needed as reading partners for the annual literacy-based “Bug’s Life” after school program scheduled on Mondays from September 30th to October 28th, according to Extension Agent Mary Rumph.

“All that is needed is a gift of time and the ability to listen to a child read,” explained co-facilitator Kristi Mobley. The reading portion is from 3:45 to 4:15 p.m. After that, the participants are engaged in activities led by teens and additional adult volunteers. Volunteer reading partners need to commit to just five Mondays.

This fall marks the 20th year for the “Bug’s Life” After-School Literacy Program. It’s open to K-4th grade students and is designed to enhance reading skills and build positive relationships with older youth and adults. Over the past nineteen years, more than 850 youth have participated in the program. Many past participants, when old enough, have become volunteer mentors to the younger children.

To volunteer, contact the Extension Office at 436-2424 by Monday, September 16th.
