Lady Hawks play Jordan, Circle

Abi Krantz (#6) and Oliveah Schaffer (#9) form a wall to block a Circle opponent's attempted spike.

The Broadus Lady Hawk Volleyball team played in two matches over the weekend, traveling to Jordan on Friday and hosting the first home match of the year, on Saturday.

With the air-conditioning on the bus in a state of disrepair, windows that wouldn't open, and temps outside hovering near 90, the Lady Hawks' trip to Jordan was a tad toasty.

Broadus opened up the first game of the evening playing in close contention to Jordan. "Overall I think we played better against Jordan in the first game, compared to our previous meeting at the Fairview Tournament," Broadus Head Coach Gordon Archer said of the first set on Friday, during a Monday interview. "Unfortunately, we let it slip away at the end," as Broadus lost the first set 24-26.

Broadus would also fall behind in the second set to lose 20-25, dropping the third set 18-25.

"We had opportunities, but we couldn't make the good stretches come together at the right time to win the games. Overall, I think this we played well and continue to improve, but in Jordan the bad stretches in between the good were just enough to keep us from a win," Archer commented.

Abi Krantz and Karli Collins led the Lady Hawk offense in Jordan, with four kills a piece.

On Saturday, Broadus hosted Circle for the opening home match of the season. "I thought Circle was a better team than Jordan, but we came out strong in the first game, fought hard, and were able to come out on top," Archer said of the 26-24 first set performance. This was the first set of the year won by the Lady Hawks.

"In all my years of coaching, I've noticed a distinct tendency for teams who win a first game to have a little let down in the second game, and that was apparent here," Coach insightfully spoke on the second game performance, which had the Lady Hawks down 16-25.

In the third, the Lady Hawks played hard but seemed to suffer a momentum shift when a mid-game reset delayed the game for several minutes. "We were able to work back into the game, but it was little, too late," Archer noted. Broadus lost the third set, 21-25.

In the fourth set, Broadus seemed to dig a hole that they couldn't work themselves out of, and lost 15-25, losing the match.

Senior Lady Hawk Karli Collins digs the volleyball in front of a hometown crowd, at last Saturday's match against Circle.

"We've got to maintain our consistency and sustain the good play. That's something that we will be addressing in practice, and something we need to be able to take it to the next level and get some wins," Coach Archer said of the loss.

Jadyn Traub led the Lady Hawks against Circle, with a dozen kills.

Broadus is expected to play Lame Deer this Tuesday night (the JV game was cancelled), which is past our deadline for the paper, so stats should be available next week. The Lady Hawks then travel to face a very tough Wibaux team on Friday. Next Tuesday (September 17), the team travels to Belle Fourche, and then hosts Jordan on the 20th for Homecoming. With some extra experience against tough teams over the next week, Broadus hopes to garner a win for the Homecoming crowd, and avenge the losses against Jordan from earlier this season.
