Hawks come close to a win at Plentywood

September 19, 2019

The Broadus Hawk football team made the long drive to Plentywood last Friday, leaving at noon and not returning to Broadus until around 4 AM.

The long drive gave the team and Coach Ross Randall plenty of time to contemplate their strategy, and Broadus was able to use that strategy to some effect against Plentywood, as Broadus was able to pull ahead early and keep the lead through much of the game.

Broadus quarterback Wyatt Gee had an impressive performance in the air, throwing for 219 yards. Coach Randall said in his years of coaching he couldn’t remember a game where a Broadus QB had thrown for that many yards.

Gee connected with Freshman Solomon Bradley on a 47 yard pass for a touchdown, while Corbin Irish drove the ball into the end zone twice on running plays. The Hawks would put up 20 points in the game, which unfortunately wasn’t quite enough to pull out the W, as Plentywood squeaked out a win, 24-20.

Broadus was up 14-0 midway through the third quarter before Plentywood could come up with an offensive answer to the Hawks. On 4th and less than a yard, Plentywood broke out a long 50+ yard run for a touchdown, and continued to make plays through the 4th quarter.

With less than two minutes left in the game, Broadus answered back, driving down the field and scoring to bring the score within a touchdown, but after forcing a 3 and out Broadus was not able to capitalize, as Gee threw an interception to seal the game.

Standout performances for the Hawks included the previously mentioned Gee, Bradley, and Irish, as well as Aaron Rogers, who had six receptions for 65 yards – Rogers also picked up a lot of screen and blocked well, according to Coach Randall.

Defensively Rogers also played well, as did the team as a whole. The team had nine sacks on the night, and caused Plentywood to have little success in their passing game. Randall mentioned Rogers, Johnny Richards, Corbin Irish, and Kyle Minow as standouts on defense.

The Hawks will now face a ground and pound Ekalaka Bulldog team this Saturday for Homecoming. Ekalaka is coming off a 44-12 win against Culbertson, and will be a tough team to beat. Action begins at 1 PM, on Saturday, with a Junior High game to follow at 4 pm. Prior to the games, a parade will take place at 10 AM, followed by a meal at the elementary provided by the Sports Boosters.
