Hawk Football meets Ekalaka for first 8 man showdown in 51 years

Corbin Irish runs for a touchdown against Ekalaka.

Broadus last met Ekalaka in 8 man football in the fall of 1968, with Broadus beating Ekalaka 27-18.

With the burgeoning population of Powder River County, in 1969 Broadus would move up to Class B and 11 man football, dropping back down to Class C a few years ago. Ekalaka would eventually drop down to 6 man football, before moving back up to Class C 8 man this season.

The teams faced off on Saturday here in Broadus, with a Homecoming crowd of Broadus fans filling the stands, and a good number of Ekalaka fans making the journey from Carter County to support their Bulldogs.

The feeling of Fall was in the air at kickoff time, with windy and cool conditions the order of the day, and very light rain falling on occasion throughout the first half.

Ekalaka has a large team, including 6'4" Mick O' Connor, son of Ty O' Connor of Bobcat Football fame.

The Ekalaka team was able to use their size to push downfield early on the smaller Broadus team, marching steadily downfield on run plays as their larger line made holes in the Broadus defense.

Ekalaka would score twice in the first quarter to go up 16-0, and 40-0 by half time.

During the first half, the Broadus offense had some chances for plays, but a number of dropped passes cut the Hawks' drives short, whenever a glimmer of hope could be seen. Additionally, Ekalaka's defense was able to penetrate into the backfield and hurry any throws QB Wyatt Gee had a chance to throw.

In the second half, Broadus was able to gain some offensive momentum, as Ekalaka put in some of their younger players to gain experience and playing time.

Gee was able to connect with his brother Dillon for a touchdown, and Corbin Irish for another touchdown in the second half. Broadus put 14 points on the board, to finish the game with Ekalaka ahead 46-14.

Broadus Coach Ross Randall noted that despite the scoreboard, Wyatt Gee played a great game – throwing for 154 yards and averaging 12.8 yards per completion. Corbin Irish accounted for 113 of those passing yards, including one long touchdown catch for 30 yards, which delighted the fans to no end.

Michael Rumph led in solo tackles, with 2, while contributing to 10 tackle assists, and had a fumble recovery. Corbin Irish had 2 solos and 8 assists. Paysen and Beau Kuhbacher also caused a fumble a piece, as did Homecoming King Aaron Rogers.

"Overall I'm proud of how the team played against Ekalaka. We have to move on and think about a win this weekend," Coach Randall said.

Broadus will next face Circle on the road Friday night at 7 pm in Circle. Circle lost last weekend to Scobey, 46-8. Coach Randall said that Circle should be a good match up for Broadus – they are smaller than Ekalaka. Circle has a good Quarterback and a couple of really good defensive ends, so Broadus will have to play at the top of their game to ensure a win.

Kyle Minow is expected to be out for the Circle game due to a concussion, but the rest of the Hawks are expected to play – 13 strong and ready for battle.
