Non-resident boaters are required to purchase AIS Prevention Pass

October 10, 2019

Non-residents planning to bring their watercraft into Montana must now purchase an AIS Prevention Pass (AISPP) before launching on state waters. The AISPP was initiated by the 2019 Montana Legislature to help fund the fight against aquatic invasive species. Non-residents can purchase the ASIPP online at fwp.mt.gov or at any FWP office. Boat owners must carry a paper or digital receipt as proof of purchase. The AISPP expires each year and is not transferable between vessels.

“Protecting Montana’s waters relies on making sure we address the threat of boaters bringing zebra or quagga mussels, or other aquatic invasive species, into the state,” said Martha Williams, Director of Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. “All the mussel fouled boats that have been intercepted to date have come from out of state.”

The AISPP fee is $30 for motorized watercraft and $10 for certain non-motorized watercraft, including catamarans, drift boats, kayaks, rafts and sailboats.

All boat owners should ensure their watercraft and trailers are clean, drained and dry before transport and need to be aware of Montana’s inspection rules:

All watercraft coming into Montana from out of state must be inspected prior to launching.

Anyone transporting watercraft must stop at all open watercraft inspection stations they encounter.
