October Weather continues trend of cold, moisture
November 7, 2019
The month of October, 2019 was the fourth coldest on record in terms of average monthly temperature in Broadus.
The 41.6 degree average temperature for the month was slightly higher than the average recorded in 2009 and 1946, with the record low monthly average for October coming in 1969, at 38.6 degrees.
The October 2019 average came in 5.6 degrees cooler than usual for the month, which has been pretty much consistent with the year we’ve been having in general. Cool temps and plenty of moisture have been the norm for 2019.
This year, the coldest temp recorded during the month came on October 30th at 7 degrees. The record low for October in Broadus came in 1991, with a recording of -12.
Precipitation for October totalled up to 1.10”, right at the average for the month (1.09”). The record for October came in 1971, when 5.86” of precip fell during the month. The record for low precip was in 1978, when only a trace was recorded over the entire month.
The 1.10” of precip in October of this year came in the form of snow and rain, with snow recorded on multiple days, including several inches on October 1.
The total amount of precipitation for the year continues to break records. As of November 5th, 23.05” of moisture has fallen in Broadus in 2019, a yearly record with nearly two months left to accumulate moisture. The normal precipitation on this date is 13.0”. The lowest recorded amount as of November 5th in any given year came in 1983, with 6.93”.
The low temps and moisture have made shipping of cattle somewhat more difficult than usual for ranchers and truckers, especially because October is generally considered to be fine fall weather, instead of early winter. With rifle season beginning in October, road hunters have been busy deepening the ruts due to the wet conditions, while also doing their best to get stuck, park on blind hills, trespass, and generally make a mess of things. Such is life in the Fall, for those in Southeastern Montana.
