Broadus hosted a pair of Veterans Day Services on Monday, November 11.

The youth of Broadus Schools performed a Veterans Day program, with several local vets in attendance to witness the event. The First Grade class recited a poem, and Senior Luke Herzog then read aloud his Voice of Democracy submission. Lisa Lynch's band and choir performed for those in attendance, leading the school in a patriotic program which reportedly was enjoyed by the vets in attendance, including Matt Zellers, Boo Crane, Rick Groff, and Charlie Barbero.

Later in the afternoon, a Veterans Day celebration was held at the Powder River Manor. Vets in attendance included Charlie Barbero, Boo Crane, Raymond Williams, Ken Smith, Gordon Mulkey, and Billy Stuver.

The event was hosted by the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, with Annie Brimmer MCing the event. The group of community members, vets, Manor residents and staff in attendance sang a host of patriotic songs, led by Annie Brimmer playing the piano.

Margaret Scoles spoke about the new Memorial Cemetery set in place near the Turret Buttes earlier this year through the work of Jaeger Held. The cemetery features gravestones honoring twelve of the fifteen soldiers who died in the area during the 1865 Powder River Expedition.

The group then listened to veteran themed radio recordings from radio host Jim Thompson, as well as a recitation of "In Flanders Fields", a poem written during the First World War by Canadian Lt. Colonel John McCrae. The poem would go on to be the inspiration for the remembrance poppy or buddy poppy, known today as a memorial symbol to veterans.

The Stitch & Chatter Quilt Club, along with the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, presented a lovely quilt to WWII vet Charlie Barbero. Other local WWII vets Bill Schaffer and Lyman Amsden will also be presented with work by the group at a different date.

The combined group also enjoyed a lovely cake and treats, provided by the Manor kitchen.
