Powder River County's very own champion, Jess Lockwood, secured his spot in history with a dominant win last weekend at the PBR World Finals in Las Vegas. The former Broadus high school State Champion wrestler is now a two-time PBR World Champion, winning his first championship in 2017. Lockwood, at 22 years old, is the youngest bull rider to win two world championships.

Lockwood entered the finals in second place behind Jose Vitor Leme of Brazil, back 749 points. Jess had led the points totals early in the season, but a broken collar bone sidelined the cowboy for nine events. Despite the missed time, Lockwood was able to pull back within striking distance of Leme going into the finals, and Jess wasn't going to let a broken bone from earlier in the season keep him from another win.

In Las Vegas, Lockwood would ride his first five bulls, recording scores of 86.5, 91.5, 92, 91.75, and 91.25. On his last bull Jess was bucked off in 4.95 seconds, but it was of no matter – Jose Leme had been bucked off earlier, sealing the win for Lockwood.

Leme did not make eight seconds on his second and sixth bulls, winding up fifth in the finals and second in total points for the season.

Over the course of the year, Lockwood would win at Madison Square Garden, in Chicago, Tulsa, Houston, as well as winning 15/15 Bucking Battles in Albuquerque, Tulsa, Springfield, Missouri, and Minneapolis.

Jess Lockwood is now one of six PBR world champions to win two or more titles, joining three-time titlists Adriano Moraes (1994, 2001, 2006) and Silvano Alves (2011, 2012, 2014), and two-time champs Chris Shivers (2000, 2003), Justin McBride (2005, 2007) and J.B. Mauney (2013, 2015).

Lockwood took home an impressive $1,391,500 from Las Vegas, with a total of $1,873,731 in winnings on the year.

In addition to the Unleash the Beast win this year, Jess took home the Touring Pro Division Title, with wins at Deadwood, SD, and Jackson, WY, as well as in Bismarck and Binford, ND.

Lockwood also received the Mason Lowe Award, given for the highest marked ride of the regular season, which came with a 94 point ride against a bull which had bucked off a huge number of riders on previous attempts – Heartbreak Kid. Jess would ride Heartbreak Kid twice in two weeks.

The Mason Lowe Award is a new PBR award this year, presented in honor of bull rider Mason Lowe, who passed away in a bull riding accident in January. The award was presented during a heartfelt ceremony during the World Finals, where Jess was awarded a cross made of leather from Mason Lowe's riding boots.

Jess will look to defend his title next year, beginning at Madison Square Garden in New York City, on January 3-5, 2020.

In the meantime, Jess will be cheering on his brother Jake, as he competes at the PBR Canadian Finals, November 22 and 23rd in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Jake goes into the finals in 17th place. Jess is currently ranked 22nd in Canadian national standings.
