Last month's report discussed school taxes and the amount of local property taxes that went to the State for redistribution. The November report also made reference to fairness and equity, along with my opinion that we need to realize everything is not always equitable. A few years ago while reading an article I came across a picture demonstrating the inequality of school funding in another state. After a Google search it seems the picture has been used in numerous scenarios with many interpretations, usually to support an argument in one's own favor. If only things were as simple as giving up a step stool as in the accompanying picture to achieve results to everyone's satisfaction.

This is the season of giving. As parents and educators this is also a good opportunity to discuss the issue of "fairness" with youth.

Over the next few weeks there will be disproportionate receiving and giving. Life is not always fair. None the less we need to give thanks for how privileged we are to give, or receive. No matter our situation, we do not have to look very hard to find people, schools, or communities who are not as fortunate. I often reflect on how lucky I have been to serve as your school administrator for over a quarter century. All of us need to appreciate how fortunate we are to reside in a wonderful community with a caring-dedicated school district.

On behalf of Broadus Public Schools I would like to wish you and your families a cheerful Christmas. All of us have much to be thankful for.
