Basketball teams kick off season

December 12, 2019

The Broadus High School basketball teams traveled to Jordan last Saturday for the first games of the season.

The Boys and Girls JV teams started out the action, with the Boys JV winning 48-31, and the Girls JV team falling 21-27.

Due to game scheduling and the inclusion of a Plevna Girls Varsity team, the Broadus Varsity Girls team did not play at Jordan on Saturday.

The Boys Varsity got off to a slow start, missing a number of shots early before beginning to come around towards the end of the first quarter.

The Hawks pulled within two points in the second quarter, but near halftime Jordan began to pull away, and kept a steady lead through the second half.

Jordan maintained a slow, methodical approach throughout the game, which Broadus had difficulty in overcoming. When Broadus pushed things to try and change the momentum, turnovers and missed shots affected their performance.

Jordan would win 58 – 37 over Broadus.

“We didn’t shoot well, and our turnovers hurt us,” Broadus Head Coach Mike Richards commented on the game. “Jordan was a disciplined team. They don’t have a lot of depth, but since they were able to control the clock we got behind and stayed there the whole game. We definitely have some things to work on in practice.”

Broadus had a 29.6% field goal percentage on the game, with 22 turnovers, compared to Jordan’s 34.7% field goal percentage, and 16 turnovers.

A bright spot for Broadus was Tayden Gee’s performance, as Gee put down 11 points and had 10 rebounds. Unfortunately, with the bright came the dark, as Aaron Rogers went out of the game in the second quarter with a sprained ankle. Richards said that Rogers may be out for a while with his injury.

Both Girls and Boys will travel to Lewistown this Friday. The Boys Varsity will face the Lewistown JV at 7 PM Friday evening, and will play a very tough Roy/Winifred on Saturday, which was the 8C District Champion team last season.

The Boys JV will face Harlowton’s JV on Friday, and DGS (Dutton/Geyser/Stanford) on Saturday.

The Girls Varsity will face Geraldine/Highwood Friday, and DGS on Saturday.

Girls Varsity will take on Lewistown JV Friday, and Geraldine/Highwood on Saturday.

The first home games of the year on Friday, December 20th, against the Plevna Girls and Ekalaka Boys teams.
