Broadus Basketball Teams Travel to Lewistown

December 19, 2019

The PRCDHS basketball teams traveled to the center of the state last weekend, for the Lewistown basketball tournament.

The tournament is arranged so the Broadus JV and Varsity teams are able to play, which makes for a nice learning experience for the younger JV athletes.

The Broadus teams left early Friday, and encountered bad weather along the route, with icy roads. Once they pulled into Lewistown, the action began quickly.

Girls

The Broadus Girls Varsity played in their first game of the season Friday night, facing the Lewistown JV.

Broadus Girls Head Coach Kacey Stanley commented during a Monday interview that Broadus started out rough, down 8-15 after the 1st quarter and 16-26 at the half. Broadus was able to battle back and tie the game in the third quarter. With Lewistown seeing their lead slip away, they put several older girls into the game, and used their full court press to limit the Lady Hawk scoring opportunities. Broadus would only score 5 points in the 4th quarter to Lewistown’s 23, ending the game in a final score of Broadus 32, Lewistown JV 58.

Lewistown led the stats in most categories during the game, except for defensive rebounds and second chance points, which Broadus led with 22 and 11, respectively.

Rachel Rasmussen led the Lady Hawks in scoring with 12 points, while Abi Krantz had 8 points and 7 rebounds.

“For being our first game, I think we played pretty well,” Stanley commented on the overall performance, adding “We have a lot of young players, and they had some first game jitters, but I think they gained some good experience.”

On Saturday, The Lady Hawks faced Geraldine/Highwood, in a game which we don’t have the stat information at this time. Due to a scheduling change, the Girls JV team played just before the Varsity game, so five Broadus players had to immediately jet across town from the JV game and straight into the Varsity game, which wasn’t an ideal scenario.

Stanley said that Broadus stuck with Geraldine/Highwood through the 1st quarter, and did good things throughout the game, but once again had trouble with the full court press. Geraldine/Highwood was able to use this to their advantage, and beat Broadus 61 to 30.

“We definitely need to work on our press breaker in practice,” Stanley said.

The Lady Hawk JV team, coached by Jacy Collins, lost in a close game on Friday to Geraldine/Highwood JV, 36 to 41. On Saturday, the Lady Hawks pulled off an assertive win against DGS (Denton/Geyser/Stanford), 41 to 25.

Boys

The Broadus Boys Varsity team, like the Girls, faced off against Lewistown JV on Friday night. Broadus Coach Mike Richards commented on Monday that Lewistown’s “JV” was in fact their Varsity squad minus three Seniors, as Lewistown didn’t have any other games scheduled on Friday.

Lewistown came out quickly, going up 19 to 16 over Broadus at the end of the first quarter, and pulling ahead as far as 12 points in the second quarter. The Hawk offense answered back in the third quarter, tying the game in the third and tying the game at the end of the 4th, to force an overtime.

In overtime, Broadus pulled ahead for a short time, before petering out at the end, to finish the game 64-71.

“Throughout the game we battled back, and lots of good things happened,” Coach Richard commented on the game. “There are certainly some things I saw that we need to work on, for instance we gave up a lot of offensive rebounds.”

Lewistown JV had 20 offensive rebounds, compared to 8 for Broadus, while Broadus pulled down 27 defensive rebounds to Lewistown’s 28.

On Saturday, the Broadus Boys played Roy/Winifred, a team which won the District 8C last year.

Broadus missed lot of shots early. Richard said during this run he initially thought: “Here we go again”, in a throwback to the Jordan game last week, which saw Broadus performing much the same.

To Richards’ as well as other Broadus fans’ delight, Broadus came back strong, going on a 16-3 run in the first quarter to end the quarter up 16-10.

Broadus kept the pedal to the floor, led by Beau Kuhbacher’s 6 three pointers in the game.

Broadus led 34-22 at the half, and finished the game with a win, 70-56.

“We rebounded a lot better on Saturday against Roy/Winifred,” Coach said of the game. Broadus also shot well, with a 49.1% effective field goal percentage, and an impressive 44% three-point percentage. Broadus had 11 three pointers on the evening, led by Kuhbacher’s six, while Johnny Richards hit two, Wyatt Gee made another two, and Solomon Bradley hit one.

Richards commented on individual performances: “Dillon Gee was great off the bench, going 5 of 10 from the field. Tayden Gee had a solid performance all weekend, and Marcus Mader really settled down, and had a positive assist to turnover ratio, which is a big help. Overall the team played well, and I’m happy about the win.”

The Boys JV, coached by Dustin Lanke, won both of their games in Lewistown, beating Harlowton’s JV on Friday 52-50, and DGS on Saturday, 44-35. Both teams challenged Broadus in the third quarter, but the young Hawks were able to pull out wins. The Broadus Boys JV are now 3-0 on the season.

The first home basketball games of the season take place this weekend. On Friday, a rather convoluted schedule pits the Broadus Boys JV against Plevna, the Boys Varsity against Ekalaka, the Broadus Girls JV against Ekalaka, and the Broadus Girls Varsity against Plevna.

Plevna only has Boys JV and Girls Varsity teams, hence the scheduling.

JV games will begin at 2:30, with the Varsity Girls game kicking off the Varsity games, at 5:30.

On Saturday, Broadus will host Wibaux, with JV games beginning at 1:30. The Girls will lead off the Varsity games at 4:00.

Here are the Varsity game stats, minus the DGS Girls game.
