Local youth compete at Black Hills Stock show

Powder River County was well represented at the Black Hills Stock Show in Rapid City last weekend, according to County Agent Mary Rumph.

Walking away with first place honors in the Junior Livestock judging division was Leslie Stradtman. Fifth high junior competitor was Krista Madsen and the sixth-place winner was Kitty Cunningham. Other junior judges included Levi Butts, LeRoy Michal, Adam Dice, Chris Gamrath, Latrisha Stradtman, Kathleen Green, and Kelly Madsen. Senior judges included T.J. Cunningham, Tavy Turnbough and Lanesa Stradtman. T.J. took sixth place honors in the Senior Livestock judging contest.

In addition to livestock judging, several youth competed in the Quadrathon, an event that consists of a laboratory practical where teams demonstrate their ability to perform physical skills and handle animals, a written exam which involves questions related to any area of animal production, the oral presentation, where teams select a general livestock topic from a hat and give a three minute presentation on it, and the quiz bowl, which is designed to test skills and knowledge.


Team members Levi Butts, LeRoy Michal, Adam Dice and Chris Gamrath tied for fifth place. Another team consisting of Kathleen Green, Kelly and Krista Madsen and Latrisha Stradtman placed fourth in the Quadrathon.

Members participating in the Horse Bowl included Kitty and T.J. Cunningham, Tavy Turnbough and Lanessa and Leslie Stradtman.

Range Riders talent show huge success

Over 120 people gathered at the Belle Creek Community Center last Sunday afternoon for the Range Rider’s 4-H Club Talent Show. There were thirty separate talent presentations.


Emceed by Leann and Leal Brimmer, the afternoon began with the presentation of the Colors, the United States Flag carried by Camille Brimmer and The Montana Flag, carried by Susan Brimmer. The club led the audience in the singing of the “Star Spangled Banner,” accompanied by Luanda Taylor on the piano and Leal Brimmer on the drums.

The afternoon program included vocals by: Luanda Taylor and Ginger Ridenour, “Don’t Toss Us Away”; Charlee Mills, “I Fell In Love Again”; Ginger Ridenour, “One Love At A Time”; Cody Morris, “Killing Time”; Leann Brimmer, “Because I”; the Range Riders 4-H Club, “Barn Dance”; Michelle Whitney and Christel Traub, “Nickety-Nackety-Now-Now,” written by the late Wade Williams; Cassy Elgin, “There Goes My Heart Again”; Alvin Raschkow, “I Wouldn’t Change You If I Could”; Luanda Taylor, “Chains”; Jack Ridenour, “Don’t You Ever Get Tired of Hurting Me” and Jack and Ginger Ridenour, “Storms Never Last”.


Piano numbers included: Mandy Rumph, “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah”; Susan Brimmer, “Captain Silver”; Christopher Rumph, “The Party”; Karen and Stacey Rosencranz, “Chop Sticks”; and Annie Brimmer, “Medley of Yester Year”.

Other instrumentals included: Donna Alderman, saxophone, “Long, Long Ago”; Howard Jones, “Violin Medley”; Bebe Warner and Bobby Andrews, and accordion duet, “Whispering Hope”; Christi Kogele, keyboard, “Chimes Duet”; Leal Brimmer, drums, “All I Want To Do Is Dream”; Bebe Warner, Bobby Andrews and Annie Brimmer, accordion trio, “Over The Words”; Howard and Clinton Jones, guitar and drums, “Wipe Out”; and Annie Brimmer, accordion, “Mockingbird Hill”.


Readings were by Marie Gotfredson, her original poem “Make A Hand”, and Annie Brimmer, “The Birthday Gift”.

Backup music and public address assistance was provided by Ted, Cathy and Tedi Jo Elgin and Cap Williams.

The Range Riders 4-H Club sponsored the event to fulfill a club goal, promoting their community.

Guests were served homemade refreshments following the performances, compliments of club members and their mothers.

Club leaders Annie Brimmer and Norma Taylor both said they received many positive comments on the quality and quantity of the talent. Many expressed hope that the event would become an annual one.
