Ag bumper sticker contest winners named

Wendy Mitchell, fifth grader at Broadus Elementary, has emerged as Powder River County’s overall winner in the annual Ag in Montana Schools Bumper Sticker Contest.

Wendy’s entry consisted of a picture of a world globe with the words “No Farmers--No Food--No World.”

Other winners, by grade, included: kindergarten, Amber Smith, Broadus; first grade, Tom Coolahan, Broadus; second grade, Christopher Rumph, Biddle; third grade, Michelle Whitney, Belle Creek; fourth grade, Steven Rollings, Belle Creek; fifth grade, James Ray, Broadus, and sixth grade, Jami Jo Capp, Broadus.

One hundred and thirty-one county elementary students entered the contest, according to Superintendent of Schools Charlotte Miller.

The winning entries will now be sent on to the state level for judging. The overall winner on that level will receive a savings bond, prizes, and will be invited as a luncheon guest of the governor.

Also, the local entries will be displayed at local businesses during Ag Week in March.

Russiff named All Tournament

Former Lady Hawk star athlete SharLa Russiff, now a sophomore member of the Miles Community College Lady Pioneers, was recently named to the All-Tournament Team at the annual University of Mary (North Dakota) Invitational.

SharLa was included with eight other girls as an All-Tournament pick. Making the selection even more prestigious was the fact that Miles City was the only two-year college represented at the seven-team tourney. The young lady, who was the only Lady Pioneer to receive the honor, scored in double figures in all three tournament games.

The Lady Pioneers, where SharLa starts as a forward, are enjoying a very successful year. With the last game of the season only a week away, the Lady Pioneers boast a 21 and three win-loss record.

SharLa, the daughter of Sam and Joan Russiff of rural Broadus, has managed also to sustain high academic standards while enjoying a fine college basketball career.

Students do well at Mathcounts competition

Broadus students did well in their first-ever appearance at the MATHCOUNTS competition in Glendive on February 15.

Broadus students Micky Sanburn, Jennifer Ullrich, Bob Landa and Waylon Billing placed ninth among the 12 Class A, B and C schools competing. Making the placing prestigious was the fact that Broadus placed above Class A Miles City.

Teams participating, according to ranking were: Sidney, Lustre, Ekalaka, Glendive/Washington, Circle/Redwater, Lambert, Corral Creek/Plainview, Wolf Point, Broadus, Plevna, Miles City and Birney/Squirrel Creek.

MATHCOUNTS, according to local teacher Connie Barnhart, is a mathematics competition sponsored by the Montana Society of Professional Engineers and is funded by major businesses in Montana. To qualify for competition at Glendive, local students tried out by taking various math tests. The four top scorers were selected to represent Broadus at the competition, according to Mrs. Barnhart.
