Out of 11 teams from around the state competing in the 3rd/4th grade Battle of the Books, Broadus's team of Reece Emmons and Samantha Threefingers-Hart, coached by Marilyn Emmons, won the state competition, with a perfect score – 16 for 16 with correct title and author for all the questions! Their win is made more impressive by the fact that many of the teams in the competition had three competitors, whereas Reece and Samantha competed as a duo.

The teammates, who are both 3rd graders, will receive a traveling trophy, with the young ladies names engraved thereon to denote the win.

In order to qualify for the competition, Reece and Samantha had to qualify locally.

On March 3rd & 4th, 22 Broadus Elementary students chose to participate in the Elementary Battles of the Books. Each team of students was responsible for reading 12 pre-selected titles and then practicing questions with their coaches. Broadus students did an excellent job of preparing for the battles and selecting the best title for each question. The 5th/6th grade division was won by Kordell Schonenback, Kassie Hagedorn, and Justin Aye. The 3rd/4th grade division winning team was Reece Emmons and Samantha Threefingers-Hart.

The winning teams went on to participate in the Montana State Battle of the Books on Tuesday, March 10. The Broadus teams did not travel to Missoula for the battle, but instead participated virtually through a video conferencing connection.

Broadus Elementary Librarian Kendra Hartman would like to thank all the judges, proctors, coaches, and teachers for their help with the battle, as well as Broadus IGA, Copps Hardware and Lumber, 1st Bank, and Henry Malley Memorial Library for the donation of prizes and treats for the after-battle parties.
