Work to Resume on BillionGraves Project

by Katie Ward

As of this Tuesday, 472 of the nearly 1500 headstones at Valley View Cemetery have been photographed, uploaded, and transcribed at billiongraves.com. To all who have participated in the past, THANK YOU! Now - with warmer weather finally arriving, I think we can make significant progress in the coming weeks! To that end, I have scheduled every Saturday in June (weather permitting) from 9:00 a.m. to noon as BillionGraves work days. I will have maps and a list of names for each section and block of the cemetery and can help you get started if you have not participated in this project in the past. The cemetery is large enough that "social distancing" should be easily achieved!

The goal of BillionGraves is: "to preserve precious records found in cemeteries throughout the world. We use modern technology to capture images of headstones with their GPS location so users worldwide can access those records anywhere. BillionGraves strives to do just that: preserve at least one billion graves." Since BillionGraves has partnered with other companies like FamilySearch, MyHeritage and FindMyPast, anyone doing family history research has ready access to photos of their ancestors' grave markers.

If you have questions or would like to know more about this project, please feel free to call me at 935-2979.
