Top notch action featured at East Fork’s annual events
Spectators were treated to plenty of top-notch roping and riding action during the East Fork Roping Club’s annual two-day Fourth of July holiday competition.
On July 3, local cowboys Ed Schaffer and Rod Schaffer rode off with the top money in the scrambled roping event, finishing with an average time of 28.97 seconds. Cliff Franklin and Dick Higgins emerged in second place with a time of 30.05 seconds. Larry Clements and Ken Dague had a time of 30.52 seconds for third place. Husband and wife roping team Diane and Buckshot Denson took fourth with a 34.22 time, Schaffer and Denson had a 39.42 second time and Gerald Ellis and Denson teamed up to take sixth, behind a time of 42.06 seconds.
Larry Clements and Ken Dague captured first place in the open roping with a fast 29.05 second time, edging out Ed Schaffer and Zane William’s second place winning time of 29.41. Scott Sanburn and Williams took over third place with a 30.80 time; fourth went to Wes Kirkaldie and Rod Schaffer and 36.25 time; Diane and Buckshot Denson emerged in fifth with a 36.87, and sixth went to Tori Franklin and Dague, who finished with a time of 37.60 seconds.
Williams placed first in the calf roping with a fast 37.96 second average on three head. Bill Reynolds took over second with a 41.07 time, and Jack Kinghorn placed third, with a time of 45.19.
Wednesday, it was on to the July 4th open rodeo and general play day of entertainment and fun.
John Beasley of Gillette, WY, took the bareback riding event. Beasley scored 60 points on his first ride and 57 on his second for a total of 117, to take the only money paid.
In the bull riding, Justin Blankenship of Ashland scored a 71 for first place. Biddle cowboy Cody Morris placed second with a 67 and third went to Kelly Compton of Broadus and a score of 62.
Compton went on to take the saddle bronc competition, scoring a 55 and 57 on two head for a total of 112. Cody Morris rode his bronc in the first go for a score of 60 to take second place honors.
Scott Sanburn of Biddle and Buckshot Denson of Ashland teamed up and finished first in the team roping with a fast 7.56 second time. Tom Wallace and Brandon Wallace, formerly of Broadus and now of Arizona, had an 8.57 second time for second. John Smith of Broadus and Bruce Amende of Recluse, WY, took third with a slightly slower time of 8.73 seconds. Fourth went to Fred Ennis of Billings and Colin Frerck of Helena, who finished with a time of 9.23 seconds.
James Tarver of Gillette had a combined 46.79 time to take the calf roping competition on the day.
Broadus high school student Wendy Badgett had an 18.03 second time to capture the barrel racing title, edging out Ashland cowgirl Vicki Small’s second place time of 18.23.
Ray Williams of Biddle had a fast 4.92 second time to take the break-away roping.
First place in the ten-to-fourteen-year-old barrel racing competition went to Levi Butts of Broadus with a 19.36 second time. Micki Sanburn of Biddle finished second behind a 20.03 second time.
Josh Rumph of Biddle won first place in the under-nine barrel racing, with a 27.29 second time. Ashley Williams of Volborg had a 30.63 second time for second; Heidi Butts of Broadus finished third with a time of 33.54, and Kori Williams of Volborg took over fourth behind a 35.22 second time.
The brief children’s acts were greatly enjoyed by the crowd as the tiny people rode sheep and were aided by their good horses around the barrels. The man and wife pair of clowns also got a lot of laughs and were ably led through their stunts by announcer Slug Mills.
Winners of July 4 horseshoe tourney
Results of the local July 4th horseshoe tournament have been released, as posted by Hazel Wetherelt.
Don Johnstone of Broadus took first place in the singles event, with second going to Ted Quade of Olive. Pat Price of Miles City took third place money.
John Barbero of Boyes and Quade teamed up to place first in the doubles. Stanley Damm and Vic Vallejo of Broadus claimed second place, while third went to Albert Neate, of Broadus and Price.
