Celebration for Coalwood Ladies Aid 75th anniversary

by Marie Benge

For seventy-five years the Coalwood Ladies Aid has been a means of community action and sociability. During World War I, mittens and socks were knitted and items made for the American Red Cross including pillows for which the children cut up old cloth for stuffing. The ladies included Anna Janssen, Carolyn Bird, Lois Janssen, Nellie Allen, Gertie Allen, Mrs. Jim Allen, Mable Hughes, Helen McCurdy, Effie Whiting, Josie Vandever, Inez Potter, Ethlyn Rolfe, Gertrude Viertel, Jessie Warkins, Mary Krauss, Mrs. George Allen, Anna K. Murray, Flossie Benge, and Julia Bird. Through the years the Aid continued its outreach through well known organizations and special projects. Entertainments to raise funds were hard work, but fun.

The Aid has not affiliated with a church, but yearly donations are given to Coalwood Church and the St. David’s Catholic Church of Broadus.

At present the Aid has a full enrollment as follows: Hallie Janssen, Joyce Strobel, Camille McIntyre, Lynnette Janssen, Mary Lou Deibel, Jackee Randall, Vera Carter, Marilyn Emmons, Helen Irion, Marie Benge, Barbara Rosencranz, Elaine Gotfredson, Claudia Stanley, Bonnie Quade, Gladys Deibel, Susan Smith, Alice Janssen, Vera Archer, Helen Janssen, Audrey Flanigan, Sandy Williams, Ann Bird, Jeannie Stanley, and Debbie Archer.

A celebration picnic is to be held on Sunday, August 26, 1 p.m. at Janssen picnic grounds just off Highway 59 to the west one-half mile north of the Coalwood house and mailboxes. A sign will be posted at the turn. Pass the word. We hope to see you there! Did someone in your family ever belong to Coalwood Aid? A list is being prepared.

Coalwood Church service will be at the regular time: August 26 at 6 p.m. Everybody is welcome to non-denomination, community worship. Pitch-in supper.

Fast moving fire contained

“It was hot. It was very hot and traveling fast,” was the first comment of Fire Chief Warren Wash, regarding the Monday afternoon grass fire east of Broadus.

The fire, of unknown origin, apparently started near the Powderville Road, he said. It was on Charles and Shirley Russell land, across the road from the Warren Linville buildings.

Responding immediately were the Russell family, others who saw the smoke, and Wash, Dennis Schaffer, George Bailey, Cary Trumps, with Curt McCamish standby of the Broadus Volunteer Fire Department with two trucks, as well as a county patrol operated by Don Rogge and George Schneidt, and Ken Rogge of the sheriff’s office.

A rapid wind change, heat, flames and smoke which cut visibility to zero put one group of fire fighters in grave danger according to Wash. They got extra warm for a short time but there were no injuries. He went on to remark that any fire in existing range conditions adds to the ordinary danger of being trapped by fast moving fire and wind changes.

Charles Russell was still out with a dozer, burying embers as dark approached and Shirley, at the house briefly for food and water, said they would alternate in watching the site all night.

The fire was called in to the sheriff’s office at about 1 o’clock Monday afternoon.
