Lady Hawks Beat Terry, Plevna

September 24, 2020

The Broadus Lady Hawks had a long but successful stretch of volleyball last week, playing in three matches in five days. On September 15th, Broadus hosted Belle Fourche, for a non-conference match.

Belle Fourche would be the equivalent of a Class A school in Montana, so the Lady Hawks might have easily felt outmatched. That was not the case, according to Broadus Head Coach Gordon Archer: "We gained a lot of confidence as the night went on, and by the third game we were playing right with them. Belle Fourche was by far the best team we've played this year."

Broadus would fall in three to Belle Fourche, 19-25, 12-25, and 22-25, but the loss seemed to show the Lady Hawks that they could play at a high level, which bode well for the coming matches.

On Friday, Broadus hosted Terry. The confidence gained against Belle Fourche seemed to spill over against Terry, and Broadus dominated the Prairie County team, winning in three straight sets, 25-9, 25-15, and 25-13.

"The girls played excellent. That was our best volleyball of the year," Archer commented. "The whole team played well, and we had a chance to play some of our younger girls. Graci [Barbero] did an excellent job serving, and Liza McMullen helped us out as well."

The Lady Hawks' confidence carried over into Saturday, as Broadus traveled to Plevna. This is the first year Plevna has had a Varsity team, and Broadus was able to come out strong and handle their new opponents handily, winning 25-8, 25-8, and 25-8. Archer used the match to try out a few different rotation strategies, and once again had the chance to play some of his younger players – in fact everyone on the Broadus bench saw playing time against Plevna.

With the weekend wins, Broadus now sits at 3-2 in the conference, with Circle and Jordan both ahead of the Lady Hawks at 4-0. Ekalaka sits at 4-1; their only loss came at the hands of the Lady Hawks.

This weekend the Lady Hawks look to extend their winning streak as they host Wibaux on Friday. Junior High games begin at 3 pm, with the JV scheduled for 5 pm, and the Varsity at 6 pm.

Next week is Homecoming, with the Lady Hawks hosting Jordan on October 2nd, and Circle on October 3rd.

Here are the JV and Junior High scores for last week - JV vs Belle Fourche: 10-25, 19-25, 15-7, 15-12, 7-15, Belle Fourche wins. JH B vs Terry: 25-20, 25-17, 15-12, Broadus wins. JH A vs Terry: 25-21, 25-18, 10-15, Broadus wins. JH A at Plevna: 25-14, 25-13, 15-8, Broadus wins.
