Lady Hawks demolish Forsyth on Homecoming

Jerry Coulter’s Broadus Lady Hawks extended their record to 11 wins and only two losses with a 62 to 48-point Homecoming win over Forsyth Saturday night.

Broadus controlled the game throughout. The Lady Hawks jumped to an 18 to 13 first quarter lead and never looked back. By half time, the Lady Hawks were up by 16 points, 41 to 25. They finished the third quarter ahead 57 to 31 and held on in the fourth for the win.

“We shot 43 percent from the field but just 10 of 32 from the free-throw line, although we were seven of fourteen going into the last quarter. The first three quarters we scored 18, 23, and 16 points a quarter for 50 points, so that was good,” said Coulter of the action. “We were ahead 57 to 31 going into the fourth quarter.”

“We tried a lot of defenses and combinations,” Coulter added.

Sophomore forward Wendy Badgett, who was named as Coulter’s Athlete of the Week, paced the Lady Hawks scoring attack with 20 points. Lauri Morella followed with 11 points and Vickie Robinson and Holly Samuelson contributed with eight-point efforts. Homecoming Queen Rhonda Raschkow scored seven points, Lyssa Thaden contributed with four, Ila Gaskill added two and Lori Ann McGill and Anna Vernon scored one point each.

Badgett went on to lead the girls off the boards with nine rebounds. Raschkow followed with eight, Gaskill and McGill came down with five each, Thaden, Robinson and Talana Traub finished with three rebounds each and Samuelson came down with two.

Badgett also led the team in steals with seven while Morella finished with four. Raschkow and Traub each had two takeaways, and Thaden, McGill and Gaskill all finished with one.

Morella led the team in assists with four. Badgett, Thaden and Raschkow had two assists each and Samuelson had one.

“We have a tough game at Plevna Wednesday, then we get a little break,” Coulter said. “Then, we play at Terry October 26 and Colstrip October 27 at home.”

The weekend win left the Lady Hawks in a solid second place in the conference behind the Baker Lady Spartans.

Word has been received by the Tim Vernon’s that their son, Fireman Apprentice Nick Vernon, has been aboard a deep submerging unit - the Sea Cliff - working off the west coast and stationed from San Diego. He is a member of a thirteen-man crew, the youngest member of the crew - being assigned to this unit directly out of Boot Camp. Usually, members are veterans of four to eight years in the service. This sub is exploring the floor of the Pacific Ocean for gravity pull and has found the wreckage of the dirigible Macon and has also found the door from the jet plane that blew off near Hawaii. Upon finishing this exploration, Nick will be assigned to the sub the Turtle, which will explore off the east coast of Mexico checking for vapor vents and thermal power. He will be the only man transferring from the Sea Cliff to the second sub, the Turtle.
