School Board conducts March meeting
March 11, 2021
The Broadus School Board met Monday for their regularly scheduled monthly meeting, with Trustees Shasta Madsen, Amanda Zimmer, Patrick Emmons, Waylon Billing, and Raquel Mader in attendance.
The board approved the hiring of Hattie Arithson as Assistant Golf Coach, also hiring Libby Nisley as Assistant Track Coach or Junior High Track Coach, depending on whether a JH Coach may be found before the season.
The board also approved the resignation of Lisa Gaskill, Music Teacher.
Next on the agenda, a motion was made and approved to open up the school facilities for the public. When COVID hit, the school was essentially shuttered for non-school related activities, such as basketball tournaments or public use of the weight room. The motion approved Monday opens the school back up for those activities.
A motion was made and passed to edit board policy 1905, which makes facemasks optional and no longer required for those in the school.
The board next considered a resolution on Montana Senate Bill 307, which was passed in the 2017 state legislative session. This bill allowed schools to raise funds for major school repairs by temporarily raising property taxes without putting the matter on a ballot. The funds would meet a state match for the repairs through the Quality Schools Program. Broadus does not raise funds through permissive mills, but it is required by law to post this notice, which will be published in the newspaper in the future.
Moving on, the matter of a levy election to fill in budget shortfalls in the general fund was discussed, with no action taken – there will not be a levy election at this time.
The school will run a trustee election if required, to fill the two boards seats up for election in the coming months from the 79J district.
The board then passed a motion to change the April 9th day off of school to a different day, date TBD, This matter came about due to the Easter break schedule, which would’ve made for a three day school week from the April 6-8. The day off will be likely taken later in the month of April, but will not be determined until the specter of winter is closer to complete, lest the school is shut down due to weather, with the consultation of the calendar committee.
In her Principal’s Report, Broadus Schools Principal Denise Ternes indicated that 99 students were currently attending grades K-6, with 106 in grades 7-12.
The next meeting of the board will take place on Monday, April 12th, at 7 pm.
