Broadus Track Athletes accelerate into wins at first meet

April 15, 2021

The Broadus Hawk Track team competed in their first competition of the season last Wednesday with a meet in Lockwood. The new facility at Lockwood features a 10 lane all-weather track, which Broadus Head Track Coach Jerry Coulter says is one of the best tracks in the area. Broadus competitors placed very well at Lockwood, especially considering they had missed a year of competition, with track shut down in 2020 due to COVID-19.

Zeason Schaffer, a Freshman, won three events in her first ever high school track meet, placing first in the High Jump, the Long Jump, and the Triple Jump. Abigail Martin, a Junior, won first place in the Javelin with a 83’ 9” throw.

The Broadus girls team had 58 points, winning third as a team at the meet.

The Broadus boys also won third at Lockwood, with 72 team points. Kyle Minow, the lone Senior on the team, won the Javelin with a throw of 136’5”, while Sophomore Tytan Hanson placed first in the Discus with a 113’4” toss.

The Hawks then traveled to Glendive on Saturday for the Wibaux Meet. The competition at Glendive was a step up from Lockwood, featuring 30 teams from schools such as Miles City, Glendive, and Sidney, as well as Class B and C schools.

Rachel Rasmussen, a Junior, placed 6th in the 3200 meter race with a time of 14:58, while Zeason Schaffer placed 6th in the Long Jump with a 15’ 7” jump.

Eli Heacock, a Freshman, had a good day at Glendive, placing 6th in the 800 meter with a 2:18 run, while Kyle Minow placed 4th in the Javelin with a throw of 136’5”, matching his throw from Lockwood which had landed him first place at the smaller meet. Minow also placed 6th in the Discus, with a 114’11” toss.

The 15 athletes on the track team this year includes 11 boys and 4 girls. Members of the girls team are Taylor Hanson and Zeason Schaffer, both Freshmen, as well as Abigail Martin and Rachel Rasmussen, both Juniors.

On the boys team, a large contingent of Freshmen are on the team, including Grayson Arithson, Cale Emmons, Matt Hansen, Eli Heacock, Josh Rasmussen, Riggin Schaffer, Brandon Rogers, Kolton Williams, and Jaxon Bilbrey. Tytan Hanson is the lone Sophmore boy, and Kyle Minow rounds out the team as a Senior.

Head Coach Jerry Coulter is assisted by Drew Anne Gatlin, a former standout hurdler for Broadus.

With the weather remaining mostly dry over the past few weeks, the team has been able to practice on our home track, though Coach Coulter says the track has been so dry that it has actually been tough to run on, telling his team that if they are able to run good times here at home, their times will be likely to improve at meets with better track conditions.

The next meet for the Hawks will be the Twilight Meet, Tuesday, April 20th in Colstrip.
