Marie Scoville

Marie Elizabeth Scoville, age 91, of Broadus, MT, passed away on Tuesday, April 27, 2021 at the Powder River Manor in Broadus.

Marie was born on December 17, 1929 in Madison, SD., to James Simmons and Elizabeth Beecham, while her parents were visiting their parents waiting for Marie to be born.

Marie's mother was a teacher from South Dakota and met her father when she came to S.E. Montana to teach school at Ridge and ranched at Ranch Creek. Her father was a veteran of the trenches in France during WW1.

Marie attended the Donald School with her two brothers James Gerard Simmons Jr. and Thomas Elsworth Simmons, until the school became too small to keep running. Her father then sold the ranch to Matt Winstel and in 1941 they moved to Boyes, MT to attend school.

Marie attended high school in Belle Fourche, South Dakota and shortly after graduation in May of 1948 married Calvin Gotfredson of Boyes, MT on June 6, 1948. They lived on the Gotfredson homestead until Calvin passed away of lung cancer in August of 1987. She then leased the ranch, but continued to live there.

In 1988 she had the opportunity to travel with the Rocky Mountain Art and Art History Class to Greece. In the spring of 1993, she visited Germany, Austria and Hungary with a musical group from Black Hills State College.

In 1993 she married a pastor, Gordon Scoville, and traveled with him for several years.

She is survived by her son Edwin (Elaine) Gotfredson, three grandchildren, Nikole, Eric and Aaron, and nine great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Calvin, and two brothers.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 6, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Stevenson & Sons Funeral Home in Broadus. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting: http://www.stevensonandsons.com.

If lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
