Coalwood to be platted as town

Immediate action will be taken for the creation of Coalwood townsite, according to John W. Janssen who was in Broadus Wednesday making arrangements for the preliminary work. It was expected that County Surveyor F.L. Funkenbusch will start work on surveying the townsite the fore part of next week.

Coalwood townsite will comprise about 40 acres of land on the John W. Janssen homestead.

The Coalwood streets have been named Main, Madison and Monroe and will extend from east to west, while the avenues, running north to south, have been named for post offices in Powder River County, Olive, Kingsley, Stacey and Broadus.

Mr. Janssen is said to have signified a willingness to donate ground for cemetery, park, community hall and church purposes.

The townsite would be platted eastward from the present store building. Business lots would measure 25 by 142 feet while residence lots would be 50 by 142 feet.

The Coalwood of today consists of a general store and post office conducted by William Janssen and a road ranch managed by Fred Janssen, both sons of John W. Janssen.

Cold, wet and windy describes the Powder River High School Invitational Golf Tournament on Saturday, May 4. About 60 golfers braved the wintery weather for Saturday’s meet.

Schools competing were Baker, Broadus, Colstrip, Mile City and Sturgis.

The Lady Hawks placed fourth with a team score of 441, their best score ever. Colstrip won the trophy with a 403.

The medalists were: Meghan Little, Sturgis, 90; Angela Coryall, Colstrip, 92; Erin Sanburn, Broadus, 97; Mary Maag, Colstrip, 98, and Kelly Christensen, Sturgis, 100.

Many of the Lady Hawks had their best scores ever. The ladies scores are as follows: Erin Sanburn, 97; Rakki Richards, 112; Kristie Coulter, 129; Karen Stanley 117; Suzanne Trusler, 115; Mandy Samuelson, 137, and Amber McCutchan, 138.

The Lady Hawks have one more meet, in Miles City, before state. The State meet is May 14 and 15 in Cut Bank and Shelby. The Lady Hawks should do well at State because each tournament their scores have improved.
