Garrett Cunningham, Broadus Class of '21, has a long history of incredible rodeo performances, especially for someone of his young age. In 2017, he won the Saddle Bronc Championship at the Junior NFR in Las Vegas, and placed second in the event in 2018. Last week, Garrett attended the Junior NFR hosted by the PRCA in Texas, an event in its second year which featured a $10,000 prize for the Saddle Bronc Champ.

Cunningham started off the event with a 4th and 5th place in the first and second go. After the second ride, the top riders who had placed on at least one horse came back for the semi-finals, where Garrett tied for 5th/6th place. With only six riders advancing to the finals, Garrett was right on the bubble, but he made up for it in the finals, after drawing the exact horse he wanted – 966 Rebel Yell from R Spade Bucking Horses. Riding first in the finals, Garrett made full use of his skills to ride an 80, and then watch patiently as the other riders tried to best his score. At the end of the day, Cunningham stood triumphant, winning the $10,000 check as well as a custom knife, leather coat, and Montana Silversmiths buckle.

Garrett plans to continue his rodeo career at MSU Northern, where he will ride saddle broncs between his diesel mechanic studies.
