Senior Center Happenings

By Senior Center Director Rita Harden

The Powder River County Senior Citizen’s would like to express our gratitude and appreciation to Bob and Darlene Salomon. We would like to thank them for being in our lives and caring about each one of us. We hope your retirement is glorious and joyful.

On May 13th, we traveled to Wayside Campground and enjoyed a lunch from Somebody’s Momma Kitchen and the baby animals. From there we went out to Spark’s to look at the baby goats. It was a beautiful day to be outside and enjoy nature! In June we took two trips to Billings to visit the Moss Mansion and an Iris Garden farm. The history and beauty of these trips were remarkable. On July 15th we took our trip to Otter Creek via the backroads. What an adventure this was!

Our next trip will be to Hill City, SD. We are planning two trips to ride the 1880’s train. On August 19th, we are planning a round trip ride on the train; it’s a morning Hill City Departure with afternoon Keystone return. This gives us time to spend some time in Keystone. Once in Keystone, we will begin to walk down Keystone’s historical Main Street. Approximate cost is $62. On August 26th we are planning a one-way ride on the 1880’s train. The transportation bus will take us to Hill City. We will ride the train from Hill City to Keystone (approximately one hour) where the transportation bus will pick us up. On this one-way trip you will see that the central Black Hills are abundant with forests, meadows and wooded canyons. Much of the train route follows Battle Creek, home to gold prospectors before and during the turn of the century. The train passes throughout National Forest Service land on its way from station to station, and passengers can also see the remnants of old mines and mining operations. Some of these mining claims have been turned into residential land, and some houses are visible from the train. County Road 323, along with a few private drives, crosses the train tracks several times, giving passengers the opportunity to enjoy the sound of a steam whistle. Approximate cost is $57. The 1880 Train is accessible to those in wheelchairs. Please keep in mind that cost-share is available for both of these trips. Please contact Rita if you are interested in either one of these trips.

Currently activities happening at the center in August are: 500 card club, quilt club, ladies’ lunch out, walking and talking, monthly birthday parties and bingo/pie social.

As many of you know, the congregate meal is held on Wednesdays at Powder River Lanes from 11:30 until 12:30. For August the meals are as follows: 8/4 hamburgers, 8/11 spaghetti, 8/18 steak strips & shrimp, and 8/25 chicken strips.
