Lady Hawk Volleyball Starts Off Season Facing Jordan
September 2, 2021
The Broadus Lady Hawks volleyball finished their season last year at the divisional tournament, an ending which left the young team thirsting for more. Coming into this season, the Lady Hawks looked to improve, and with no graduating seniors from last year, the team was intact and ready for action as they faced off at home against Jordan, last Friday.
Broadus Head Volleyball Coach Gordon Archer knew that Jordan was going to be a tough opponent for the first game of the year, but his team had been practicing hard and knew the task laid out in front of them as they entered the stifling hot gym on Friday.
For the first two sets of the evening, Broadus looked solid. Serving well and with fewer errors than Jordan, the Lady Hawks swept the first two games, 25-20 in both games. In the third set Jordan seemed to come up with some defensive answers to the Lady Hawk attack, shifting the momentum to their side.
"Volleyball is one of the most mental sports out there. It's all about momentum and the psychology of knowing you can win," Archer told us in an interview earlier this week.
Indeed the Lady Mustangs seemed to take advantage of the momentum shift in the third and fourth sets, beating Broadus 25-19 and 25-18, forcing a fifth and final set to determine the winner.
Broadus was up during the fifth set but just couldn't keep the lead, as Jordan came back to win 15-13.
Standout performances from the Lady Hawks included Lauryn Billing going 19 for 20 on serves, and Zeason Schaffer and Abi Krantz, who each had 8 kills, with Schaffer contributing 4 blocks, and Krantz 3.
The Lady Hawks were up bright and early Saturday morning, traveling to the Fairview tournament where they would once again face off against Jordan. This year the tournament featured two set pool play, moving into a single elimination tournament. Broadus played the other teams in their pool including Jordan, Ekalaka, and Fairview, then moving on to face the number 1 from the other pool, Richey/Lambert. Broadus lost to Jordan in the first meeting, then beat Ekalaka and Fairview. The Lady Warriors had put Broadus out of the divisional tournament last year, and Broadus was happy to beat them this time around. Broadus then went on to beat Richey/ Lambert, placing the Lady Hawks into the tournament championship game....against Jordan. In their third meeting in 24 hours, the Lady Mustangs once again beat the Lady Hawks, placing Broadus second in tournament.
Archer told us that with both Olivia and Zeason Schaffer gone from the tournament, other Lady Hawks had to step up and start on Varsity. Taylor Hanson played as a middle hitter for her first time on Varsity and excelled at the position, while Graci Barbero stepped in to serve, performing admirably in the role.
Broadus will play at Plevna this Saturday, with a JH match beginning at 1:30, and a Varsity match at 3:00.
