The Lady Hawk Cross Country team made the long drive across Montana to the State Cross Country Meet in Missoula last week, with the race taking place on Saturday.

Cross Country Coach Ashley Emmons told us the weather was perfect for the race, in a strong contrast to some years when snow and cold made for difficult running conditions. This year, the air had a bit of a chill in the morning but turned out perfect for the three-racer Broadus contingent, consisting of Senior Lady Hawk Rachel Rasmussen, Junior Mercy Brost, and Freshman Rebekah Rasmussen.

Emmons said that the State Cross Country Meet is a spectacular event to behold, and one that's very unique in the sporting world. 1403 athletes from all classes, from all around the state competed at the event. When combined with all the fans that were on hand to watch the action, the event was huge indeed.

Ashley commented that during each race, lines of fans filled the last mile of the course, cheering on racers from all teams. Annnouncers were able to keep track of the action through GPS pins for each racer. This meant that the announcers and crowd were able to follow every race – not just for first place but for close place finishers further down the line.

Emmons said the excitement and overall atmosphere was intense: "The State Cross Country Meet is one of the most positive competitive experiences I've ever seen," she said. "I saw two teammates cross the line holding hands so they would finish at the same time. It's just an amazing experience."
