March Weather Was Exceptionally Dry

Broadus received a scant 0.24" of moisture in March, trailing the long term of 0.78" for the month.

March is normally a fairly dry month, placing it 8th in average precip by month and trailed only by the official "winter months" of November through February. By contrast, April historically receives the third highest precipitation by month, averaging 1.77", and May topping the list with an average of 2.75".

Broadus received 1.09" in total moisture from Jan 1 to March 31st of this year, slipping behind the average for the first ¼ of the year at 1.89". That total could easily return to normal during the coming historical "rainy season" of April through June.

When it comes to temperatures, the average temperature for the month of March of 37.9 was right in line with the long term average of 37.6 degrees. A warm first fews days of the month was offset by a cold snap during the second week of March, which created below average temperatures for a time. The lowest temperature for the month was 0, recorded on the 10th. Eventually the mercury climbed to above normal highs, with a high for the month of 80, which fell on March 28th.


Stations around the area recorded fairly similar results for the month.

The Biddle 8 miles SW station received 4" of new snow on March 5th, and the thermometer dropped to -2 on the 9th and -4 on the 10th, for the station's coldest readings of the month. The high for the month was 78, on March 28th. That station received 0.35" of moisture in total, compared to an average of 0.77" in March.

The Moorhead 9 miles NNE station had 3.0" of snow on March 5th, with temps dropping to -1 on the 9th and 10th. The high for the month was 81, on March 28th. That station received 0.30" of moisture in March, compared to the normal 0.70".


The Sonnette 7 miles SW station received 5.2" of snow in total in March, with 3.5" falling on March 8th. That station saw the coldest temp recorded by an official station in March, at -10 on March 10th. That low temp was still a ways off the record for March 10th, which was -18 in 1998. The high for the month was 78, on March 28th. The station received 0.24" of precipitation in March, compared to the 0.91" average.

The Fort Howes RAWS station had a paltry 0.11" of moisture in March, with temps dropping as low as -12 on the 10th. The high for the month was 80, making Fort Howes the "winner" of the highest differential between monthly low and high for the month, with a difference of 92 degrees.


The station received a peak wind gust of 40 mph, on March 12th. The average daily high wind gust was 24.8 mph with an average wind speed for the entire month of 7 mph.

The Volborg station, which only records moisture, had 0.20" in March.

The Powderville 8 miles NNE station received an inch of snow on the 5th and another inch on the 8th, and the mercury dropped as low as -2 on the 10th. The high for the month was 77, on March 28th. The station received 0.23" of precip in March, compared to the 0.74" average.
