Basketball Teams Win Home Games

The Broadus Girls and Boys Varsity teams motored over Terry on Friday, in their first conference test of the basketball season. The Broadus teams combined for 125 points in the wins, with both Broadus teams scoring their highest point totals of the season thus far.

Girls

The Terry team came out and knocked down two quick three pointers early, but from there on out it was all Lady Hawks as Broadus scored an outstanding 0.95 points per possession in their 68-42 win on Friday, as they dominated on the boards with 42 rebounds, and scored 27 points off Terry turnovers.

"We knew going in that Terry was talented, and though they're young they're very tenacious," Coach Ashley Emmons told us during an interview on Monday. "They've been building and show a lot of talent. We knew if we let up they'd come right back into the game," Emmons said as she commented on her use of the full court press – whenever the Lady Hawks dropped back to a half court press, Terry started to chip away at the lead.

Despite the pressure, Broadus continued to hold a steady lead throughout the game, as four Lady Hawks scored in double digits on the night. Emma Isaacs led the team in scoring with 18 points, going 5 for 5 from the free throw line.

This week the girls play St. Labre on Thursday, and Melstone on Friday.

St. Labre is a bit of an unknown, while Melstone is expected to remain a tough team, despite the graduation of Draya Wacker, who was the 11th girls player in state history to reach 2,000 points, and now plays for the University of Montana.

Boys

The Hawks rolled into their first home game coming off tough road trips where they went 2-2 as they played several teams with State aspirations over the first two weeks of the season. By contrast, Terry won their first four games of the season, with their nine eighth-graders and five foreign exchange students on their 17 man squad playing well against lower ranked teams.

With Cooper Zimmer back on the court for the Hawks as he returned following a football injury, Broadus was not to be stopped as they rolled to an easy 57-31 win over the Terriers, scoring 0.97 points per possession vs. Terry's 0.55.

Marcus Mader led the Hawks in scoring as he put up 23, with Dillon Gee adding 16 points to contribute half of the Hawks' 32 points in the paint over the course of the game.

Leonardo Mogni led the Terriers in scoring, with 15 points.

Despite the win, the Hawks' three point shooting was atrocious, with the team going 2 of 23 from beyond the arc.

Coach Dustin Lanke was not pleased with the Hawks' three point shooting, as we sat down to talk with him on Monday.

"We settled for a lot of poor looks at threes," he said, noting that Terry played a lot of zone defense and left Broadus players open for wide open shots. "Last week we were only able to practice on Monday (due to the school closures Tuesday and Wednesday), and that may have led to some of our problems with shooting threes, since we didn't have that time on the court," he added.

A bright spot for the Hawks was their performance from the free throw line, which Lanke has been pushing for the team to improve this season. The team sunk 15 of 20 from the line, for a 75% free throw percentage.

Defensively the Hawks also shined, forcing turnovers and scoring 16 points off those turnovers.

This week the Hawks take on St. Labre, which Lanke tells us has improved over last year but is still not expected to be a major contender. Melstone defeated Jordan on Saturday, 49-46, and are expected to be down somewhat this year compared to last.
