School Stays With Modified 4-Day Week

The Broadus School Board Trustees met for their regular monthly meeting on Monday, May 8th. The results of the school calendar survey were discussed. 209 responses were returned to the school regarding the survey, which asked several questions regarding the modified 4 day school week for the 23-24 school year adopted by the board at the March meeting.

75.1% of those surveyed were in favor of the modified 4 day calendar, with 24.9% not in favor.

105 survey responses were from parents of Broadus School students, 25 were from school employees, 96 from members of the community, and 26 from students.

A large number of comments were also garnered with the survey – some positive, some negative, and some confused by the calendar, with what Fridays would be on or off.

The full results are available to view at the Broadus Schools website, http://www.broadus.net.

With the large number of survey takers in favor of the modified 4-day week, the board made no changes to the adopted calendar, thus the modified 4-day calendar will remain in place for the 23-24 school year.

Other action before the board included issuing certifications and oaths of office to trustees beginning new terms. Those trustees included Dan Krantz, Dawn Aye, Kristy Elgin, and Shasta Madsen.

Amanda Zimmer was voted as Board Chairman; Rob Jones as Vice-Chair.

The board voted in favor of a resolution showing the school had made a reasonable effort to reschedule instruction time from the missed school days earlier in the school year. Students in some elementary grades have been making up five minutes per day, while a day originally scheduled to be off school was re-scheduled as a school day.

The board accepted the resignations of the head football coach, Wyatt Williams, as well as the head girls basketball coach, Ashley Emmons, and the JH/HS art teacher, Erin Switzer.

Several hirings then took place, including Stacy Hagedorn as the elementary PE and driver’s ed teacher. Hagedorn will take driver’s ed teaching classes over the summer, in order to be certified for next school year.

Superintendent Hansen commented on the hire: “We are happy to be able to provide driver’s ed to our students and families here. Stacy is a good fit in our community.” Most schools in the state, if they offer driver’s ed, only offer classes during the summer, per Hansen.

The board also hired Kate Ruland as JH/HS art teacher for the coming school year.

“We’re very lucky to have her here,” Hansen commented on Ruland, who had previously taught at St. Labre.

Cody Earley was hired to teach summer school, and Levi Mitchell was hired as a part-time IT Coordinator. He previously held that position along with the head maintenance position before leaving for the Sheriff’s Department. Mitchell will work on a part-time/on call basis. The school also has a contract with an IT firm, if other computer related needs should arise.
