Plane carrying Iva Kolstad makes emergency landing

A light airplane carrying Lt. Governor Allen Kolstad’s wife Iva was forced into an emergency landing situation on a county road near Broadus last Saturday night.

Mrs. Kolstad and pilot Roger Lincoln left Broadus Saturday night’s Republican dinner at the local VFW Hall, en route to Ledger. About 20 miles out, around 9 p.m., the plane ran into a severe weather front that forced Lincoln to turn back. Once at the Broadus airport, however, they were unable to land because of the high wind and poor visibility, caused by blowing dust. Several minutes later, Lincoln noticed car lights on a county road. Determining the road was straight in that particular spot, he made a successful emergency landing, on the Big Powder Road near the Leland Cook Ranch.

Local rancher Monty Fredrickson arrived on the scene and drove to the Cook Ranch for material needed to secure the airplane for the night. After the plane was tied to a fence, Fredrickson brought Mrs. Kolstad and Lincoln to Broadus, where they spent the night. Glen Burton returned them to the plane the following morning, when the weather had cleared.
